Post by Rsachi »

Just managed to start listening at isailive to the video archive of Amrutha, M Rajeev, NC Bharadwaj concert. She begins brightly with Vasudevayani.
Excellent team work and high energy body language...
Thought I will ask you to join in listening....

What a lovely Nalinakaanti!
In fact that is an anvartha-naama of Amrutha's music: so fresh, so delicate, so bright...

A lovely exposition of Shanmukhapriya... brings to mind the way MMI played with swaras and gamakas...she's a force! Well deserved applause.
Marivere Dikkevaraiyya Rama. Very clear sahitya enunciation.
Lovely swaras. Somehow a lot like MMI.
Now Tani...

Most importantly, She actually listens to her own music and enjoys it as she sings. Makes a world of difference from the execution-oriented style of singing.

Using isailive.dinamalar.com site is quite easy, provided you have a degree in brain surgery.

1.go and click on the video link.
2. It will ask you to register using FB or by filling up stuff.
3. It will ask you to pay 99 Rs or 599 Rs etc.
4. Go through the payment gateway.
5. Then depending on your brain surgery degree quality and star positions in your grandmother's horoscope, you will be repeatedly treated to some ads and disconnects.
But finally you will reach your goal son! Don't give up.

This concert alone is a good reason to go through this whole rigmarole.

Bharati, Mark my words. This girl is going to be a superstar and will shine for 5 decades. Her rocket first stage itself is full of fuel:
1 passion (from infancy) for music
2 well trained in vocal and veena
3 great academics - won several gold medals in chemistry or something
4 chose music for a lifetime 100% occupation
5 has taken the best of the past and present masters
6 has eschewed a sweaty gymnastic style and embraced a sweet and yet deep classical style
7 knows many languages well
8 has a voice with reach and no rough edges
9 can last 4 hours easily on the concert stage
10 has a mind of her own in everything
11 has no time for nonsense

Rsachi sir - Is her style predominantly BMK's or a blend of BMK and MLV (through Charumathi) or a style of her own?

I did not find the MLV style.
I do find the "simple and melodious" singing style of BMK. A lot of straight notes.
But she sings with a lot of filigree and finesse, something I don't find in BMK or Prince.
She seems to have assimilated the swara kalpana technique of Madurai Mani Iyer- I felt it to be so a number of times.
Her kriti diction is better than that of all the musicians I have mentioned here.
These are just my opinions. Amrutha herself may not like these comparisons as she would hold these names as "godly".
The 30th Dec concert is also as Isailive. Her Pantuvarali there is excellent, I heard it rather late at night so dont recall all the details. But it has been reviewed here

I also thought her Abheri alapana and Bhajare Re Manasa was a class act.

Strangely I find quite a bit of overlap with the Sanjay style. She may pick one phrase in a kriti (say, "Maathanga mukha" in "Sri mahaganapathi ravatumaam") and make it the focal point of presentation by packing it with so much punch to make sure its beauty is not missed by even the uninitiated (like me) in the audience.

Not like me at all. Don't have any real formal knowledge so am quite literally uninitiated. I feel a Guru would draw attention to the beauty of significant phrases in a kriti and without the benefit of one, I am left at the mercy of the performing artistes :-)

Guys, take a leaf out of my book.. The book of empty pages. Every musical experience is a new sketch done by that artiste in my book, which I learn from looking at, as best as I can. BTW IMHO MENNK.

10 has a mind of her own in everything
Seems like it and also carry herself with a lot of humility. That is the hard stuff.

I think I relate to what Suresh is saying about her style. And some of that is quite extemporaneous (at least it looks that way). I attribute that to her abundance confidence which allows her to get drawn in by the effect of her own music on herself.

Hey, if you all put yourself at the bottom in terms of music appreciation, there is no room for me. So raise yourself up a lot please :)

I remember a story.
There was a famous Muslim king who prayed every day that he was the humblest among Allah's servants.
One day he heard a fakir on the street praying. Many people said that man was the humblest of all people, he was a great saint.
The king had him promptly beheaded. How could anyone be humbler than HIMSELF!!!!???

sureshvv that was funny :) I have a (voice)copyright on my handle :) I agree with vasanthakokilam - Judging by your postings, lesser mortals like us will have to scrap for space in the basement if you put yourself in the bottom :)
I have seen Amrutha in many of Sanjay's concerts.... I have heard her partially once in the afternoon slot in MA last year (2013). I will make it a point to listen to her next time she sings in Bangalore. I had heard about her a lot as a "golden girl" - but never made a serious attempt to go to her concerts. One of the reasons I had heard was the switch from MLV to BMK style which seemed odd to me - no offense, both giants in their own right.
RSachi - do you know when she is singing in bangalore (south preferably) in the near future?

I think the Golden Girl title was given when she won 9 gold medals in her degree (Maths?) course- If I am not mistaken the honour was given to her by our Grand Rasika- the one and only Arasi.
P.S.: All the above need cross verification. Sometimes you have to excuse my memory loss due to age :)

I am not sure whether Arasi gave the title Golden Girl to Amrita Venkatesh. But I am sure that Arasi gave this title of Golden Girl to Parassala Ponnammal Mami.

I thought Parasalla Ponnammal was christened the 'Golden Girl' by Sri Rama Varma. (Ponnammal, Ponn in tamil means gold).

I am sure Smt.Arasi would not be widely distributing the title of GG- something like religious mutts distributing aasthaana vidwan titles - just like Sundal prasadam :)

Outside of carnatic music, these are the golden girls I have grown to like. I miss them these days. Any mention of golden girls brings this bunch to mind.

An acquired taste I picked up from the missus!

Golden Girl: Not sure who gave this moniker to Amrutha first. Here is a reference and related information in print from 2011:
