Duelling Viruthamists

Post by dhanurasi »

Due to the curse of Youtube, I listened to this post recently.

http://youtu.be/3_ov8ZrwLD4

They dare sing Viruthams :o I am shocked that the crowd has the audacity to applaud it.

Wonder who gave these ladies the licence to sing in Tamil like this and more importantly who authorized the crowd to get excited about the transition from the viruttam into the song, however surreal it seems between 13.20 & 13.30

I am telling myself that this should be an odd instance.

Yesterday there was this Abhang Akhandam somewhere in Chennai.

In the interests of Sociological Research, I should have attended it to see if the Mylapore Mamas and Mamis who clamour for the Fat Ghost Song were there in force but prior commitments prevented me from going.

Also, I don't know if commonplace singers would move me to dance for the refrain "Vittala Vittala, Vittala Vittala" and if they did, I would have died of exhaustion after 24 hours of it.

dhanurasi, I see what you did there :)

I have a feeling that people are not going catch your drift and think that you did not like what the sisters did with the viruththam.

If I have not understood wrongly the originator of the thread indeed has said that viruttam has been murdered (in as many words) !

I am sorry for that post in haste. I understand I didn't write it well. It seems that edit option isn't available now.

Let me make an attempt to clarify. My edited post would have read like this:
I listened to this youtube post recently. http://youtu.be/3_ov8ZrwLD4

They sing Viruthams! We are shocked that the crowd has the audacity to applaud it.

Wonder who gave these ladies the licence to sing in Tamil like this.
More importantly, who authorized the crowd to get excited about the transition from the viruttam into the song, however surreal it seems between 13.20 & 13.30?

The duo should know that we refuse to listen to anything they sing except perhaps a 5 minute Abhang. That too with the sole objective of enabling a research. Women are not supposed to sing with maturity, emotion, control and power.

They also commit this crime of drawing crowds. Isn't that enough proof that their music isn't great?

We have declared that certain musical heights are reserved for only those in our favourites list. Of course, the list will not be updated.

I am still not clear as to the accusation.I wish the post clearly state what is the objection so that even some of us rasikas can understand the point. It has been endorsed by some of the knowledgeable rasikas.
However I would appreciate if the post can be re phrased. When such controversies arise,it is better to interact with the artists. The present generation of artists are accessible thru web pages and they have E-mail as well.In case they attract crowds,it cannot be dubbed as a crime!

I think the OP and the subsequent post has to be read as brimming with sarcasam, a form of nindA stuti, and a complete tongue-in-cheek potshot at other comments posted here before by others (think vAzhapazhattil Usi).....:)

Ravi,
"How dare they?" sayest thou...
Duelling IS dare while poor viruthams
Dwell alone--no drums, no beats there
And how they rise in glory when dealt
With fine phrases steeped in bhAvam!

pAvam, virutham, when duels do them in...

MV,
ari mA ('the great lion' in tamizh) cannot be that easily challenged :)

RasikAs.org brims with humor along with arguments, though not all of it does not make the grade. Why, in the tamizh threads and in the Hilarity thread which dear GBL started years ago, we find many a moment of merriment.
Hat's off to humor and to those who bring it to us...
