Post by thanjavooran »

S/Shri TMK vocal
Akkarai Subbulaxmi Violin
Poongulam Subramanyam mridangam
Papanasam Sethuraman on Kanjira.

1. Nathathi Guruguha Mayamalavagowla.- 7 min.
2. Danyasi ragam - 8 minutes. No follow up by violin.
3. Meenalochana SSasthri- 8 min.
4. Sahana raga alapana by violin straightaway followed by Emanithichevo by
Thyagarajar- 20 min. Krishna joined her for niraval and swaram at Namattalo.
5. Thanam straightaway in Beghada -17 min.
6. Indha chalamu jesithe- Varnam Begada kalpana swarams-13 min.
7. Mini thani- 5 minute
8. Ellam Sivan seyal endru Kalyani after 3 minutes of alapana- 15min.
9. Thani - 10 min. Miruthangam was very good.
10.Enthatikuluke- Javali Kalyani Darmapuri Subbayar.
11. Slokam Moulam Ganga - Bhairavi- 10 min.
12. Mangalam.
As usual it was not a regular cutcheri as rasikas are experienced with, particularly senior citizens. But the listening for nearly 2 hours was excellent and very pleasing. Mridangist and Kanjra player were in front, violinist was by his side, two sruthi players at the back and possibly a sishya was also on the stage.
In the middle of the concert he announced that applause was not necessary unless rasikas wanted to, yet applause continued even after this!.
A photographer was on the side of the stage for snaps and waiting as Krishna was closing his eyes throught the concert. He looked at the photographer for a minute and he moved away not to be seen again! Mirudhangam and Violin played their role well. Though it was strange as usual, yet a Blissful experience.

Suddhananda Bharati is an interesting composer and personality. I think he was more of a poet and all his songs have been set to music by others. My Guru Shri KSK has set a number of songs to music. I have sung songs like Aaduguraan kannan in Kapi and Ellaam SIvan seyal in Vasantha in the past. In fact there is a nice version of Ellaam sivan seyal in Kalyani in one of the Annamalai Univ publications, I think set to music by Tanjavur K Ponniah Pillai. I had specifically asked my Guru to set that song up in Vasantha for me to sing.

Thanjavooran, thanks for your writeup. TMK sang "ellam sivan seyal" in Kalyani in Tamil Isai Sangam last month.

The SHloka is "maulau gangA". We have discussed it earlier. It is by Appayya Dikshitar.

Reading the first 4 items in the song list, i was wondering whether the Vocalist was inadvertently mentioned as TM Krishna.
However, seeing item 5, it was evident that it was indeed TMK :)
The circus starts midway in this concert perhaps.
As long as it is enjoyable, I guess, any order or any circus is OK !

Heard TMK say:
He wants to sing Varnam in the middle as people start arriving and finding a seat only by the time varnam ends. (maybe varnam is a welcome piece -we say 'varanam' when someone comes).
He does not waant to sing mangalam because people start leaving as soon as mangalam is started.
