WORKSHOP TO MODEL RAGA ALAPANAS
A first-of-its-type workshop is being conducted by Acharyanet & Madhuradhwani at Arkay Convention Centre, Mylapore on Jan 31st, 6 pm featuring maestro Chitravina N Ravikiran.
This is intended to benefit middle, advanced and performing level students in concerts as well as competitions. A few well-known as well as rare ghana, rakti and ranjaka ragas will be taken in the first part of this series with practical tips on how to open, develop, build up and wind down around key phrases and notes so that the essential features of the raga are brought out clearly and beautifully.
"Whole careers have been made and sustained by many legends because of their ability to render even short but outstanding expositions of alapanas of ragas like Yadukulakambhodhi, Nayaki, Ahiri, Anandabhairavi," says Ravikiran. "Therefore, it is very essential for students to grasp the life-points and notes of ragas clearly early in their musical journey. A student's grasp of the nuances of raga will percolate over to rendition of compositions as well as neraval, kalpana-swaras etc".
Acharyanet.com has conducted many workshops on manodharma as well as compositions of Trinity, Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, Pallavi Gopala Iyer and specialized forms like Javalis, featuring legends like Tanjavur Shankara Iyer, Sangita Kalanidhi R K Shrikanthan and others which have benefited students and musicians worldwide. This workshop is the first among what is intended as an ongoing workshop series in which the organisers hope to cover a couple of hundreds at least.

Re: Workshop to Model Raga Alapanas by Chitravina N Ravikiran
Any sensible person is very well aware that recognizing the difference in the face of a person only brings out the true difference of the person with all others but not merely the name only. In the same manner, even in respect of our Ragas, the different treatment of the notes only brings out the true difference of different Ragas but not merely the difference in the names only. Accordingly, I hope Chi. Ravikiran, as a very highly knowledgeable person, is very well aware of this fact and honestly and sincerely tries to give out this true knowledge of different notes also in his workshop along with others. I shall be very thankful to him if he arranges to send me the audio-recording of the same, if possible, online to my email address ‘[email protected]’. If he arranges to send me the details of his bank account I am ready to send him the fee of Rs.600/-. amsharma

Dear Akella garu,
Just to clarify that I am not organising this, just presenting it on that day. That said, this is also not intended to be at a level of a great artiste like you but more for students who wish to get a fundamental grasp of various ragas which they can use as a base and develop their skills over time, learning more masterpieces, listening to great masters and also introspecting a lot about the nuances that make CM what it is. Also, a wonderful performer and guru like you should not have to pay for such things. I am sure the organisers will be happy to share it as it is.
Regards...

Chi. Ravikiran dear,
Along with many others, even though I also got Top-rank in AIR, I sincerely feel that I am not fit for that and have to learn as much as I can from each and every person as per the saying ‘Mukhe Mukhe Saraswathi (Nakhe Nakhe Saraswathi)’. Day by day the thing I have to learn has gradually been increasing than what I have already learnt. More over, even at this old age, I have always been trying to find different ways to make the process of learning our music much easier and quicker to our poor aspirants. In this process I need help from each and everybody. Thus, I am interested to follow in which way you, as a knowledgeable person, feed the aspirants. Hope you give me the opportunity.
Blessings. amsharma

Very true Akella Sharmaji,
It is just not music but it applies to every field.
" The more and more you learn , you only realize how much you do not know".

Dear brother-member, ganesh_mourthy, Yes, it is very true. Almighty is the only full-fledged musician and all others are only parts of Him. As you truly wrote only by learning more and more we realize how much we do not know. That is why we must always keep our eyes and ears open to learn things from all others. amsharma
