Seems like it was a tyAgarAja Aradhana on a shyAma shAstri puNya tithi, but the crown was reserved for ShyAmA shAstri. Prestine music with a whole lot of fireworks marked a memorable 3:30 hr concert of Abhishek @ Gayana Samaja

Of late it seems like Kalyani was made / invented for Abhishek. Every time we listen to his kalyANi, a new facet of the rAga is explored !!

Thank you for the song list.Though the concert was good,a sense of proportion was missing. The main item Kalyani lasted for 87 minutes.
Alapana -23 min
Violin - 11min
Kriti - 32 min
Thani- 21 min

Abishek raghuram could have curtailed the main item to a manageable level and included RTP.Normally all the front line singers complete the main item including thani in 50-60 minutes.
I think he does not get a chance to explore in Music academy such places where the timings are strictly followed.

True, within the 'structure', Abhishek lets go his crativity unrestrained. In SBI, the best chairman, Sri RKT, remarked, 'I have exceutives who have the determination to say what they have to,' in praise of an executive (he retired as chairman of IOB) who put up a note opposing RKT's known views. Abhishek has a determination to express himself musically with nothing in reserve. Sogasujuda was the first song without any preamble, but the word filler may not be apt in his concert, even it had a swaraprathara. I feel the lack of sense of proportion is not a blemish, not contemplated and is artistic. What all he did to capture a raga from many angles, I feel, no one else does. Even Ananthakrishnan clapped when his epic delineation of Kalyani, which was rather more melodious than majestic, ended. The audience enjoyed it unreservedly as I sensed.

The organisers appealed for donations exempt from Income tax under 80G.But for smaller donations like rs 100,200etc,a box was kept outside. It seems the box was empty after 6 days of houseful festival. After Abhishek's concert,a handful of us donated small amounts in the box.Majority of the Rasikas were interested to rush to their cars. There were at least 100 cars in the concert venue. But no soul ever thought of the box!

I was adding my comments as the concert progressed on Facebook. :)
I think Abhishek was in a bright mood from the word go. Charulata was excellent throughout. Anantha is of course almost Abhishek's alter ego so you take his many excellences for granted.
Harikambhoji, Rasaali were done well. Kalyani had a lot of Kirana gharana type of akaaras treatment. I would surely fault the alapana for missing the melody quotient a bit. The rarely heard Shyama Shastri krithi was very well rendered with the usual panache that Abhishek brings to any song especially one with such taut laya structure and it's inherent mishra Chapu offset eduppus etc. Anantha's thorough tani explored all the nuances of this grand Tala. Guru Prasanna was an able accomplice.
I had commented that a PMI might have refused politely to play a tani saying Abhi had already done all the laya vyavaharam that would have been moot.

The last three items were very well rendered, full of melody and devotion.

Abhishek is a class act.

SREE RAMA LALITA KALA MANDIRA is an exemplary act. They have run a festival round the year, year after year, for 60 years, by spending family wealth and even sold a house for much needed funds for the cause. So many youngsters owe their future success to the good break SRLKM have given them by spotting the talent young. Sri Krishna Prasad mentioned that they will be e Sudha Raghunathan deliver their 1500th concert in May/June.

It is deeply disturbing that people do not voluntarily give back to such a splendid cultural benefactor despite an appeal from the podium. I feel very sorry.

Dear Rsachi,

Year after year they are giving great music feast to the rasikas. The box is kept every year and mostly will be empty.Hence i have mailed my suggestion that
-Have a desk and persuade people to give donation .This is followed at Nadasurabhi,Koramangala and Seshadripuram ramanavami festival
-Keep a nominal rs 300/rs 500 as season ticket.
I know that the ticket money will be hardly count, but still will meet some minimal expenses.
I hope they listen and implement this rather than simply keeping a box which gets nothing.
In fact i appreciate Chennai model where some of the sabha concerts are ticketed. The Fort High School concerts of rama Seva Mandali are ticketed, but the amount can provide for some minor expenses. But something is better than nothing!

Fully agree. Also it is a bit funny to see the reserved front rows empty when I struggle to find my way to the balcony seat.

Some of the invitees and sponsors seats are kept reserved.Perhaps 50 percent of the empty seats could have been released.

Looks like February is the Margazhi (Music) season in Bangalore.

Dear HarishankarK,

It is good to think Feb as Margazi, but Rasikas should help the organisers to keep it going!

HarishankarK
its better than Margazhi...it is called the Basant Panchami or Vasanta ritu!
Basant means spring, whereas Panchami means the fifth day of the spring. It falls on Panchami - on the Waxing Moon. The festival is celebrated in the month of January-February. This is one of the most grandeur festivals to beckon the arrival of the spring. The festival is not only celebrated in India but also in Pakistan as Jashan- e- Barhaan or the Celebration of the spring. This festival is celebrated as the end of the winter. The young girls dressed in the diverse shades of yellow magnify the splendor of nature. Kite flying, a popular sport in India, is associated with the Basant Panchami day. There is reason for the same, yellow is considered lucky and moreover its signifies spirituality and the same time is also signifies and new beginning that is the beginning of the spring. Hence people wear the color, apply Tilak on their forehead dishes of the same color. The festival is celebrated in differently in different parts of the country. There is both a spiritual and at the same time cultural aspect to celebrations.

¤ Saraswati Puja
The day of Basant Panchami is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati . Saraswati is the goddess of learning who bequeaths the greatest wealth to humanity, the wealth of knowledge. Hindu mythology depicts Saraswati as a pristine lady bedecked with white attire, white flowers and white pearls, sitting on a white lotus, which blooms in a wide stretch of water. The Goddess also holds the veena, a string-instrument, like Sitar, for playing music. On this day, people offer special prayers to Goddess Saraswati and also enchants Saraswati mantra. The puja is the highlight of this day.
