Rathnagireeshwarar temple concerts are very special . I have attended suryaprakash, abhishek, vijay, sanjay, prashanth prasad and few more whom i forgot now . Suryaprakash aesthetically came with kaledioscopic shades just few points on those aesthetics.

MMi School ++
-------------
Suryaprakash comes from the MMI school . And that particularly came out well in reetigowlai particularly with the arresting long swara patters in intense mmi sarvalaghu for the first tatvam aria tharamA . The todi main alapana and krithi rendition was a sure departure away from mmi school , (this tamadam en swami is a gnb popularized number ). I particularly heard janta and dhatu sarvalaghu patterns like MMI in swaras of todi . Our forumite srinath has described in a post before on MMI rendition of swaras - the todi swaras were of those type . Particularly there is a bit of joy when doing those long swara patterns in general when vocalist only sings without any accompanist support and then violin with percussion plays it - it was boris becker serve and an andre agassi return. Also the last kalpitha note of MMI - HMB was nice.

Borrowing from other schools KVN ++
------------------------------------

Of late the KVN inspiration shows up in Suryaprakash's voice production, few like Cleveland VV Sundaram sir have said . Crystal clear diction, sruti perfection and the emote syrup of keeravani in the neraval line of tannai ariginra tavmE peridenru dharaNiyil was simply reminding one of KVN , not an imitation. Also singing longish viruththam is bit out of vogue nowadays. He sang virutham alone for about 16 mins with such crisp return from agassi, it was well done . THe tevaram line especially in dwijAvanthi vEdam nangilum of kadalAgi kasindu was almost equal to half the song of chetashri balakrishnam!

Borrowing from other schools Maharajapuram Santhanam ++
------------------------------------
Mohanakalyani alapana and bhuvaneshriyA was well done , the vishranthi was very much there with no sag and lovely stay in emote and controlled power was possibly inspired by Maharajapuram, but again no imitation. I liked his swaras at the end for about 4 long minutes ending with no agassi return.

Creating a originality all of his own with all the inspirations RSP ++
--------------------------------------------
The lathanthapriya is very emotive and the line naadathinal namakku came out very well , this swarna venkatesha deekshitar krithi needs more exposure. Todi alapana construction was exploratory and came out well . I am not sure who else sings this particular krithi of guruguhAdhanyam in balahamsa because my memory has faded and i am not sure if i have heard live of this balahamsa krithi . When he sang the alapana of balahamsa my head was continously flickering like a to be soon gone tube light , I liked the MD krithi for its usual muttuswamy dikhsitar weight .

Having said all of this I also did not like Suryaprakash that much in few areas RSP --
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. If you observe very carefully lot of singers are not singing fast filler krithi with long swaras before main .I am talking about these krithis like manavyala kinchara in nalinakanthi, bantureeti in hamsanadam etal . Just look at all reviews of all artists see how many of the musicians sing fast filler with long swara pattern . I felt this is especially an USP of TVS and Suryaprakash school .Also TNS school and disciples of him do it. Musicians like sanjay, abhishek ,vijay usually skip it . This time suryaprakash sang enta venduko with swaras , but the swara downpour was not long enough. I wish he maintains a 100 % consistency there as it is a unique usp of his , I personally go for his fast filler with long swaras with zero or minimal violin return. Unfortunately the swaras were not long this time.

2. Krithis of GKB like innnamum sandeha padalama touch my heart . There are few krithis of GKB like eppo varuvarO are bit too worn out . Time for suryaprakash to sing this krithi on rare occasions! Also in this concert when he sang viruththam with emote which was very high that climax is nice way to stop the concert at lathanthapriya than rather going with eppo varuvarO where the percussion overload is high. The eppo varuvarO yesterday was requested by the fellow ghatam artist Trichy murali ,whatever the case may be - I think that extra animation in eppa varuvArO bit puts me off .

3. I love this tamadam en swami . Forgot if GNB sir sings a neraval or not .I have heard sriram gangadharan singing wonderfully and once rsp sang before . All occassions there was no neraval in tODi for tamadam en swami. May be one there would have been wonderful. I want R N S T main , i dont want R S T main.

4. Just a minor crib . While he sang with lot of spread of nice compositions why should he end with vazhiya senthamizh .... vande mataram in a shivan kovil . Bit out of place .

Few words about fellow accompanist:

----------------------------------

Rathnagireeshwarar temple generally we have lot of senior accompolished artist sitting and participating . In particular few years back when Madurai GS Mani spoke wonderfully about abhishek raghuram that touched my heart. Yesterday it was vidwan Tadepalli Lokanadha sharma from chitoor subramania pillai , I have immense respect for his altruistic approach. If possible i will put that 7 min audio speech , i have it in my mobile.

Tadepalli sat for the whole concert and he walked out with me at 09:40 pm. I am just relaying what he said in tanglish. On Suryaprakash he said - nadopasanA , ON Varadu he said -anusaranai and said varadu knows where to fill the gap and how to fill up the gap. ON Arjun Ganesh he said romba thada thadannu vAsikAma nalla vAsikirAn (no chaotic play only orderliness).ON murali he said he knows how to callibrate his play for all musicians considering that he plays for many.Fellow musician accomplished opinions are far more important to relay than mine.

For me personally I have heard varadu and murali playing for suryaprakash. WIth arjun ganesh i think this was the first concert for me to hear the combo. I liked all of the accompanist so much for their teamwork.I did not concentrate that much in tani(hunger pangs hit my concentration).

Rathnagirieeshwarar temple concerts and zero intimation :
----------------------------------------------------
My aunt who is 70 + in besant nagar was notified by her friend day before yesterday of abhishek concert . My aunt at 05:30 pm called me two days back that abhishek is singing . I could not make it as travel commute is too far- I wish some one sponsors me a helicopter . My aunt also relayed me that rsp is singing tomorrow . The concert is not advertised in page 6 of the hindu.

If you go and stand before the temple and watch the sivakasi vinyl poster you see there is 10 concerts
. In the last one week seetha rajan, gayathri girish and abhishek and few more already sang - I had damn no clue .Today Feb 13th - Rama prabha is singing , Feb 14th -V sankaranarayanan - nagai sriram and team are performing , ON Feb 15th from 6 Am onwards for 24 hours , tadepalli lokanadha sharma is performing . There is some thing on TLS I will push the mobile recording of 7 mins.

It is just frustrating for me to miss few without knowing them . Please some one go for Rama prabha(30 mins more atleast),v shankaranarayanan and TLS akhandam and let us all know.

Suryaprakash said at 09:30 pm i can sing more - Ana time ayidathu prior to mangalam . I am glad atleast that did not happen at 09:00 pm.I wish all musicians singing in chennai emulate that of RSP.

Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 35 minutes with 7 mins of speech and temple prasadam distribution .

Ravi,
we call kalpana swaras where kalpana means on spot . Usually when krithis have swaras in between appended they are usually called cittaswaras . I was just thinking why cant we call nottu swaras as just kalpitha swaras , where kalpita is always precomposed . As such no one has ever used a term called kalpitha swaras . My own taxonomy, the whole review was a bit of that reflection of slicing and dicing. The madurai mani note and english note since from the days it was sung by mmi thru tillana mohanambal to yesterday is the same .

One of the best concerts of Suryaprakash I have attended. I feel he sang within his reach and to his strengths. Original song list with items carefully selected (rajeshnat's cribs not withstanding :-) ).

I was just thinking why cant we Call nottu swaras as just kalpitha swaras
i think we ought to leave nottu swaras remain nottu swaras. As far as I know kalpitha(xyz) is just kalpana(xyz) turned into reality for a brief while.

Maybe , it is not given to us mortals to hold the winds in our palms.Let alone christen them.Bade Ghulam Ali goes to extent of dubbing it as a play of breath .saason ka khel
