This kucheri being on a Saturday evening, was a crowd puller as expected. After the formal garlanding etc, the concert commenced by 6.45 or so. After the varnam and varasikhi vahana, even during the arabhi kriti, the mike settings for the vocalists was quite poor, subdued by the loud –settings of the pakka vadhyams. I felt the beauty of the Arabhi ragam and that particular kriti was masked due to this, This prevailed throughout the concert, almost till the end. Next, the alapana was taken up by Ravikumar, with many in the audience making wild guesses about the new raga., RK explained that it was Natakapriya, which is a combination of thodi partly and Kharaharapriya partly. He also sang the Aarohana & Avarohana. Then before singing the kriti, Sreeramprasad(SRP) narrated the story, where Sri. Voleti garu had requested N. Ch. Krishnamacharyulu garu to compose a Sanskrit song on ‘Ammavaru’ in this ragam. Thus this kriti was written, which has the ragamudra that the Bros highlighted by singing the swarams in that line. The next Sanskrit composition (on Swamivaru) of DIkshitar was like a filler, which was followed by the two brilliant pieces of Thyagaraja swami which also our desire. The mukhari alapanai left us guessing again, whether it was going to be a thyagaraja kriti, when SRP announced that they were going to sing a composition of Subbaraya Sastri on Kamakshi. And that Sri. Subbaraya Sastri avl had the unique opportunity to learn from the Trinity of Carnatic Music . This main item was rendered unhurriedly, Tani was excellent, with our fellow forumite, Mannarkoil Balaji garu on the mridangam and PVRM on ghatam. The RTP was a pleasant surprise, tanam rendered along with mridangam support, the pallavi lines appropriate for the Saturday, Anjaneya devotees,. As usual, the post-main, tukkadas comprised one each of different composers, that the Bros normally choose to sing. Vittal Ramamurthy garu’s violin was very enjoyable and supportive, which enhanced the aesthetics. Overall, a nice sort-of a concert, which could have been better, if the mike settings had improved.
