Sunday Morning concerts are usual avoids for me other than kutcheri season. But of late if spending time with family slowly becomes
a part of our life, I think the best thing to happen is having a concert in sunday morning . Mylapore that too with metro road digging is a nightmare on weekdays. At 10 AM on a sunday there is an entirely different experience.I even had a chance to park my car in the epicenter of mylapore in north mada street . At 10:02 went inside the BVB hall , to find an abysmal crowd of 6 that peaked around 20 . I tried to go on time to not miss openers, but with an assurance of not hearing the tambura or anything - i knew there is going to be some more time ,prior to start .

Mylapore karpagimbigai mess is a lovely pilgrimage center(CM has taken me out of karpagambal temple), had a vadai and coffee and came back as though I am shooting for a watch advertisement as the time was 10 12. A sabha patron just spoke and wrapped his speech and said this concert is a birth anniversary commemoration of DKP. Mylapore bi polar disorder on a sunday was in full swing - at times they throng and say DKP, DKJ and papanasam sivan went around mAda veedhi and they think CM is precisely alive because of this spot around mylapore temple. At other times the swing is just the other way - no body cares about DKP, DKJ and mAda veedhi , mylapore madness and disregard for music, art was evident. To an extent this has got nothing to do with artist -I am pretty sure vidushi Viji subra pulls a significantly more crowd - but on a sunday she got caught in the wrong side of thirumayilai bipolar disorder

Vidushi Viji subra presented a nice concert which showcased one side of her guru S rajam , who has learnt along with DKP many krithis (especially MD krithis)from TL venkatarama iyer . The start was era napai not much of todi came at times i also miss a long round of swaras in varnam and that was the case. The next was a rare MD krithi in devakriya (sudda saveri)and I really liked her start , swaras had bit more energy and she settled quite well.

Pantuvarali alapana usually goes bit more in higher octave but i found her restraint and sticking with madhyamakalam was also excellent and I enjoyed her alapana. In the krithi i felt she could have started with bit more throw - kind of excess smooth sailing was there in pantu varali. swaras were well done felt not that okay when she decided to skip neraval in submain. eppadi padinaro and her preceding alapana was quite short and i liked her alapana bit more than the krithi. Atana was the lowkey of the concert not much speed or any change in laya pattern -filler was not an aesthetically pleasing filler .

I personally like bhairavi as a main and I liked her alapana , there was a shade of serenity at times in alapana and also in krithi rendition. I knew she is heading for a neraval and with she singing neraval in another line(vaiNika gAyaka guruguha ) made me look up . But however the rendition of her neraval did not impress me that much at all , there is just over caution there and bhairavi in neraval was a bit of straight vAl.

The filler navarasa kannada -nAnoru vilayattu bommaiyaa was sung well. The best piece of the entire concert was a serene rendition of the last number and the preceding slokham . EMote matched her voice and it was really superb in subhapantuvarali??(may be it was hindustani lalit) and meera bhajan was superb. She ended with a mini slokham in revati and wrapped up , perhaps a jump from revati to tillang with shanthi om and then going with a dkp number like shanthi nilava vendum . She has impressed me with a pallavi few years back when I listened to half her concert , there was time , the hall is big but she choose to not give a tribute to DKP who is also known to come up with some great pallavi in ragas like jaganmohini.

Gopinath played well from second half post pantuvarali. Skanda kept up the tempo very well and possibly may have had a slightly high sound . The relatively high AC affected their sound quality.

Vidushi Viji subra indeed scores on emote but with a feeling of excess smooth ride- i felt the vigour and kalapramanam changes was bit missing . She gave two interesting anecdotes especially one on DKP and was just too funny. Will share it in DKP thread soon. Viji subra is so fluent , she just spoke few minutes in thamizh and english and she was excellent there .I do know she learnt from s rajam and one other guru sangeetha bhooshanam(forgot his name) that has given lot of krithi rendition suddham, but i wish to hear a side of another guru TRS in her. TRS was bit fleeting in devakriya ,bhairavi but can be much more . May be I was not that lucky.

Overall a good to very good concert for 2 hours.

Rajesh,

It is interesting that she sang bAlagOpAla. This song has an extra line vANIshArcita-pItAmbara-dhara! vaijayanti-vanamAlA-dhara! between mAnikyamakuta etc and ANavAdi etc.

S,.Rajam was one of few artistes from Madras who sang this line, while DKP (and most others) didn't; the curious part is both stalwarts learnt this song from Ambi dikSitar. Can you recollect if VS sang this line, or if she left it out?

Among current performers, I have heard Shertalai Ranganatha Sharma sing this line in a SVBC Tirupati concert.

And this could be the verse she sang. It is verse # 46 from Rupa gOSwamin's padyAvalI -

3. visAlAkshi vishvEshi(R,S) - pantuvarAli - MD
Isn't this supposed to be in Kasiramakriya rather than Pantuvarali?

Isn't there supposed to be a difference between the two ragas in that the former does not admit of sancharas beyond taara sthayi gandharam?

Keerthi,
I vaguely recollect a phrase pitambara some time when she rendered the balagopala , since I was kind of hunting for a neraval line after she went past neela nirada in anupallavi, I can be still be wrong. Vijisubra is her id , she or few other forumites can clarify.

She mentioned that TL venkatarama iyer was the common guru for both DKP and SRajam. I am sure VijiSubra also knew Ambi dikshitar who has also taught both stalwarts, she did not mention that.

Has DKP also sung the Rupa goswamin lines as slokham?
