Ata thala varnam

Is there any technical reason why all ata thala varnams start with the ring finger ( mean the sahithyam) or it is a tradition?

It is probably tradition - although with that, start along with charanams starting in samam, all charanam swaras would take 16/32 counts which is perhaps more "standard" or "easy" (but then I am not sure CM every took the easy way ).
