Bharat Sundar, Cleveland Aradhana 2015

Post by maduraimini »

After a short break, (an errand, no less) I was on time to hear Bharat Sundar. I have heard him sing in the competition and win the title. It was nice to hear a full fledged concert of a youngster I have seen compete for the title. He started with Mysore Vasudevachar's Kamas kriti 'Brochevarevarura made famous by the Melody queen M.S. herself. I don't know if he sang a varnam or Ganesa kriti before that. When I came, he started Brochevarevarura. After this, he sang Poorvikalyani raga alapana, which was very good. He chose 'satre vilagi irum pillai, Gopalakrisviolin was hna Bharathi's composition. The raga alapana was splendid. V.V.Murari's violin was accommodating. The next kriti was Thyagaraja's Tulasamma in the ragam Devagandhari. This is another of my favorite ragam. A soothing Karaharapriya raga alapana was something to hear. Murari's raga alapana was pleasing to the ears. He started the kriti with Chukkala Rayuni then went to the pallavi. Set of swarams were setnup like building blocks. It was enjoyable with the violin . After the niraval, swaram at Sukkala rayuni, Trivandrum Balaji on the mridangam and KVG on the kanjira had the Thani, which was very mellow. After this heavy song it was Behag raga with Gopalakrishna Bharathy's ' Irakkam varamal ponq karanam'. When he finished this, V.V. Sundaram spoke about Baharat's music. The concert ended with that. I have to get used to the idea of a concert without Mangalam. I know for sure I am getting OLD!
This young man's concert was very good and I know he is going to reach a high spot in the CM world.

maduraimini,
Bravo! How quickly can one bring a review! Puts the younger ones to shame ;)
He started with one of your favorites--ErA nApai, the thODi varNam--sung like a seasoned vidvAn.

You also missed his sAmaja varadA in shudda sAvEri.

He has the ghanam and sweetness in his voice which is appealing (have heard him on youtube
before, but not in concert). His pATAntaram is of high quality--PSN, and before him, the gurus who have guided hime, I suppose.

saTRE vilagiyirum piLLAi by GKB was appealing.

My picks were kharaharapriyA (a beautiful start and good throughout), and tulasammA.

Bharath Sundar handles sangathis with ease and the delivery is crisp and clear.

VVMurari can be relied upon to give sweet support, though at times he can be brief.TVM Balaji the able and affable one, and Gopalakrishnan whose playing I'm partial to, anyway, gave a cheering support.

Sundararajan,
If you didn't hear him today, please do, when you get the On Demand package...

Punarvasu,
You at least could hear him.

Here I'm saying 'we oldies', shame on me--your dad (Veeyens), until he left this earth, was writing and sharing his thoughts with us with clarity and alacrity...

Please watch more and report too...:)

Arasi, yes. As long as he had the ability to talk, he was talking, singing. He would have turned 95 in 3'weeks!
Glad that the organisers have made arrangements for live webcast and it is very clear!

Thanks Arasi, for filling me in with the 2 songs I missed. I loved the Karaharapriya alapana very much.
