This is the second time that I am hearing concert in the iconic kapali temple. Last year I heard brinda manickavasagam in one another thamizh month ,this time I had a chance to hear Vijay in panguni festival . Mylapore temple is a blessing for any musician as there is a huge footfall , that too considering that nowadays sabhas in chennai are not that keen on holding concerts like bangalore .The usually high concert count of chennai is just reduced to a particular day trickle . In the last one week concerts are held in ayodhya mandapam(rama navami) and a second trickle in kapali temple (panguni festival)and at time minor trickles in hamsadhwani, adayar . Even ragasudha hall is having for a change carnatic indigestion problems . Where are the sabhas like nadopasana, safe,NGS mini ,sarvani all are in long hibernation.

Vijay comes from a school that is known for the paddanthara suddham and his concerts are especially well centered on the spread of compositions . I love his music and there were another 800 folks who sat and enjoyed his music. The start in heavy raga begada was well done , but the volume of the speakers was deafening and loud. Begada adequately warms a musician voice and ensures that it opens out well for the rest of the concert . Abhogi as #2 is a lovely drop and my dear sabapathi came out well , his neraval in oru tharam siva chidambaram was measured but there was a conscious high pitched throw that gave Ah Ah Abhogi the Wow wow charm.Chakravakham alapana was well done and I did not go thru the usual sequence of disambiguating any of chakravakham zone siblings . The krithi was sung well and he did sing a round of measured swaras.

The serenity of his presentation certainly went one full point up when he presented bowli md krithi -shree parvathi. Lovely intersect of raga bhavam that went extremely well with his sanskrit diction and kept me in a trance for a while. The submain in simmhendramadhyamam is very rare , i may have heard a rare recording but i forgot that number . He started with the anupallavi line guha saravana and he sang very well the krithi ihaparam ennum of sivan , neraval was measured and I felt he could have gone bit more. Bhairavam filler was not that appealing and it was just a pass thru.

The main in kAmbOdhi was sung wonderfully by vijay. He spaced his alapana in full power with an intermediate violin return in kAmbOdhi. The krithi rendition of shree subramanyaya was superb, for every sangathi vijay took an extra care to sing with that extra expressive throw that kAmbodhi demands. Neraval and swaras were well done, little more vistaaram in swaras would have been better.

Most of the tukkaas were well done , his usp of language spread was indeed there . Purandara dasar kannada krithi was little not that high on aesthetics but the rest were immensely janaranjakam and enjoyable . Particularly the viruththam was high on emote in all three ragamaliga ragas(the first could have been karnataka devagandhari, abheri or bhimplas???) . The viruththam followup number thannaiyarindhu inbamura vennilAvE in mAnd was perhaps a black and white film song that papanasam Sivan tuned . There was a swAjana number which mimicked jana gana mana and was quite dense with words. Though all the numbers had a lot of demonstrable references on thirumylai, in the last number i thought he will end with karpagamE considering the venue , but he surprised with vazhiya senthamizh possibly the offical govt of tamizhnadu organizer from temple who came in white and white would have liked it more .

The volume of accompanist was high atleast till first 4 numbers and was reduced when sound engineer came around and checked with few of us . Charumathi had a nice press and azhuttam , particularly her kAmbOdhi was very well done . The young NC bharadwaj played very well and indeed did up the overall quality. Ghatam artist Trichy krishnaswami?? gave adequate support and his controlled aggression came out very well in main krithi.Their tani was better in first half.

Vijay was also supported by a young sishya for few songs with mic (not N Harish or the other sishyas whom i have seen before- if some one tells his name that would be wonderful).I wish the concert went till 9pm but it was over in 2 hours and 10 minutes. If there was little more free flow on alapana/neraval/swaras where there is a movement away from *measured* sangathis bit away from a typical DKJ/DKP school , that would have been lovely. But I adored vijaysiva sincerity in presenting concerts with the focus on the core idioms of carnatic music with his *usp on krithi paddanthara suddham*.

Overall a very good to excellent for 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Rajeshnat, thanks for the comprehensive review. Hope to read one of Sanjay's too.

Is not "thannaiyarindhu inbamura vennilAvE" a song by Ramalinga Adigal(Vallalar) ?

Thanks. You are correct Rajani. There is a song with the same starting words by Ramalingasvami. I am sure Vijay Siva sang this one.

Thanks, Rajesh. The kapali temple series is excellent! I'm so glad that you got to attend. Hope you can cover some of the other concerts there this year also!

#5 is such a wonderful composition. I can't say I've heard anyone other than MSS sing it (with orchestra no less).
It has to be begun with the anupallavi for full effect though! I love the tisra nadai lines in the end of anupallavi and charanam.

I thought NCB was a direct disciple of Karaikudi Mani. Very talented young mridangist! Glad that he got an opportunity to accompany Vijay.

Preferably accompanied by a circular overhead sign as they do for powerplays i limited overs cricket. Will lead to less commotion with guys seated with small(kannan-mudhra) pocket books in concerts :D
And more accurate labelling in archives.
Here is a version from a 1966 concert

Varsha-ji: You are such a treasure trove, with these gems just waiting to be released in context!

It is songs like this that would make me call Papanasam Sivan an uttama-vaggeyakkara. Upstarts (not naming names) who presume they are fancy because they think that good music has to be over 100 years old, just need to listen to this! And to top it all off, this was actually from a movie soundtrack sEvA sadanam (directed by K Subramanyam, father of Padma Subramanyam & Abaswaram Ramji).

Thanks Rajesh. Perhaps many may not be aware that Shri Krishna Premi swamigal has composed several HUNDREDS of songs in tamil and Sanskrit. And set them to pure karnatic ragas.

mahavishnu,

your arguments move the clock from 100 by another 50 and odd. Not much progress is it?. pApanAsam sivan is proof positive for how much the syllable selection , ordering and positioning is important and why Trinity's work is so important for CM. When I listen to Sivan's lyrics - I get the same feeling I get listening to anna pUrnAStakam (for e.g.) of Bhagavat pAda. ati saraLam.
