Vijay
I used to be a part of the Cheer Leading team , once upon a time.
In fact , long long ago , I used to take her permission to upload some of the gems , but then these things cannot be continued for long.
Not that I have lost my admiration for Pantulas music in any way , but then My schedules for attending concerts are a bit difficult to explain.

Our Monthly programs- She is definitely in our list with Manda Sudharani, Bangalore Sankar and all the rest.
I only need some time to settle down with these priorities.
Outstation artistes- I need to find a way of knowing their Chennai schedules so that we can take the benefit of their presence.Certainly we are not in a position to afford costs of travel and stay - right now.But that is another story.

Vijay,
Thanks for the New York style high energy review, poetic none the less. Wish your travels weren't that frequent...

Your review is as usual great. My only crib is your promotion of kalyAni as prathi madhyama emperor. Perhaps I have a better suggestion , give that to either pantuvarAli or poorvikalyAni(first choice) or shanmughapriya/subhapantuvarAli,

or else

Totally have no emperors in prathi madhyamam kingdom( vidwans madurai gs mani calls it as duplicate madhyama , so why have emperors for duplicate kingdoms ),instead bring one more emperor mukhAri in the kingdom of sudda madhyamam, poor mukhAri he is always a prince to emperor kharaharapriya and sometimes always bullied by the emperor bhairavi.

kalyANi , a rAgam that is so easy to take by any musician :), but most difficult to impress  :As I pen this, i am listening to mmi's vasudevayani, how effortlessly the genius impresses me.

Rajesh, I am quite aware of your (and Bharat's) distate for Kalyani! But you would agree that is the emperor in terms of the frequency with which it is taken up for elaboration as compared to other Pratimadhyamas (maybe Purvi Kalyani would be a clsoe second) . BTW Subha Pantuvarali is my favourite in pratimadhyama as well...

Anyway, I am a sucker for Kalyani although it takes a lot of musical insight to make it sparkle - otherwise it does tend to sound very ordinary as compared to say, a Sankarabharanam or a Thodi which sound good even if the rendition is average

But I guess preference for ragas is a very personal thing in the end.

Vijay, I do not think so. In fact singing any of the major rAgas well is the hallmark of a mature artiste.

Given a choice between attending a concert and reading its review by Vijay, i think i would prefer reading the review.

Vijay,
Go ahead and do so, if your boss favors NY style and has a poetic sense. Surely, he must have zeroed in on your merit by now. Otherwise, he wouldn't be banishing you to kalinga dEsA and other 'outbacks' (musically speaking).

I am with kApi on sankarAbharaNam and thODi--especially thODI--the slippery most in the hands of lesser musicians...

Rajesh,
You do bring a breath of fresh air to the scene. Some of your intuitive probes and your absorption in CM are assets...

In that rendering I posted, SRJ mentions that Alathur Brs used to sing this. Listen to this here

Thanks for those gems DRS! And your good words, Rajumds..

Arasi & Kaapi, what I meant to say was that a humdrum (and I don't mean incorrect or out of tune) Thodi/S'bharanam still manages to keep me interested but if Kalyani is sung indifferently, I really start fidgeting...but I suppose it is a personal thing

Arasi, unfortunately the corporate world is not blessed with too many people with an ear for music or poetry - so I think I will save my plaint for a raise rather than for more musical sabbaticals (which is how my presence in Chennai is viewed!)...

BTW, the boss is a "she" - you have now relinquished your right to accuse anyone of gender stereotyping!

DRS Sir, your link says "site under maintenance" when I try to download. I had tried when you first posted it and again today. Could you please upload it again? Thanks in advance and sorry for the trouble.
