And once again, a request to call this ashTapadi, and not ashTapati (the latter would mean 8 husbands, perhaps?)

Incidentally as an aside, while ashtapathi could mean one with eight husbands (!) or eight masters, ashtapAti would mean one who has read/mastered eight books, similar to TripAti to mean one who has read/ mastered three books, DwivEdi, trivEdi, ChaturvEdi for those who have mastered two, three or four vEdAs.

tripAThi written in Sanskrit as त्रिपाठी the root is as given below
त्रिपाठिन्

(H3) त्रि--पाठिन् [p= 459,2] [L=87933] m. familiar with the 3 वेदs (epithet of a commentator on Va1s. and of several copyists).

Agreed. The confusion arises out of transliteration from Samritam to English.
"pat to read" is the root. patathi=reads
त्रिपाठी = tripAti or tripAThi is my difficulty in transliteration. Which is correct, as per convention , I am not sure.
In Tamizh also we say " padi" படி for reading !
