The concert started at 19 10 hrs though Mirudhangam and violinist were present by 18 45 hrs.
Today Maharajapuram S Srinivasan could not come as per schedule since he lost his mother today early morning. Kovai and mannarkoil raised to the occasion and immediately arranged Surya prakash who landed today morning only. Sabha secretary mentioned this and thanked the vocalist's gesture before the start of the program. He praised the efforts of Kovai and Mannarkoil for their immediate action. Surya prakash in his acceptance speech told that he needs no thanks as he is bound to honour PSS and its Rasikas. He also said that he has high regards for this Sabha.
Reg the concert, Violinist Mohanam was excellent .Mirudhangam was very good as usual and Mannarkoil showed his talents during thani that lasted for 5 mts. The entire menu was well planned and Surya prakash deserves excellent commendation. There were 75 rasikas and all enjoyed till the end.

Terribly sorry to hear that! Sincere condolences to the Maharajapuram family. I have fond memories of Gnanam mami from my childhood, when Sri Santhanam was a frequent visitor at my family home.

Kudos to Suryaprakash, Chandran and Balaji for being able to deliver what appears to be an excellent concert at such short notice. And for performing a tillana by Sri Santhanam, which is a very nice gesture. Even mOhana rAma was a song that he sang quite often.

Mohanam and Kalyani were excellent. Hemalatha's Niraval and Swaraprastharam on Kalyani were very good and pleasing. Though initially the Hall was half empty later it was full and all enjoyed the performance. There were two slips during thani it was made good by Sivaraman tactfully.
The entire 2 hrs program was excellent

My observation
The episodes were divided into segments viz Balakandam, Aranyakandam etc. and quotations and references from Valmiki, Kamba Ramayanam were co related with Thyagaraja kritis. To me it was like reading out the thesis paper and not much musical. Shri Sundaram is a very learned person with vast knowledge in Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu Literature. It was painful to see the Hall going thin in short while and the program was not lively as I expected. IMO may be the organizers would not have got enough feed back before arranging this Lec/Dem. Violin and Mirudhagam played its roll well. Shri Sundaram mentioned that he was inspired by Shri S B Krishnamoorthy of Hindu

My observation

The concert started exactly at 18 45 hrs since the Artistes were present by 18 30 hrs. Shri Rajarao was assisted by Smt Kanakadurga a disciple of DKJ and she learnt music under Gurukulam style. After marriage settled down at Dubai and presently in Chennai under tutelage of Srimushnam. There were two more disciples assisted him. Smt Vara lakxhmi Ananda Kumar also a disciple of DKJ and by Raja shree of Mathsya Hotel family a Kannadiga.
Today's special guest was Ananth Vaidhyanathan of Vijay TV who was present from beginning till the end. Raja Rao mentioned that he is closely associated with this Sabha since many years [ during the period of shri Sethuraman ] and accompanied many Vidwans in this Sabha. One must be a vocalist then only he can play Mirudhangam. 4 generations of his family are vocalists besides mirudhangam players. He prefers to be a Mirudhangam Vidwan only as it is very difficult to maintain voice. Even a cool drink after the performance will affect the throat/ voice for many days. Because of this reason not accepting vocal concerts. As PSS and its Rasikas are very special to him he accepted the invitation.
Kanaka durga and Vara lakshmi were closely following Srimushnam in delineation of raga, niraval and swara singing.
Srimushnam's niraval and Swaram resembled SSI style. He explained St T's kriti while singing Ethavunara with Ganapathi raman playing Mirudhangam continuously reminding me of Harikatha Shri TSB. Totally a well planned concert and disciples were given full freedom in showing their skills individually.

Thank you so much for bringing good old Perambur Sangeetha sabha's Chithirai Isai vizha reviews as you have done in the past.

Just like Suryaprakash to oblige, stepping in at the last minute. Instead of a cancellation, the listeners were treated to his music, with able accompanists.

Sorry to hear about Smt. Santhanam's demise.

I had heard that Srimushnam was an accomplished singer. His wife Padma Chandilyan too. Don't hear much about their very talented son Raghavendra's concerts. Wonder if he is concentrating more on his modern music. Have heard Kanakadurga a few times (also a student of Ambujam Vedantham).

thanks for your compliments. there are a lot of inconveniences we face while organizing the programes
just to quote immediately on the 13th when sri.s.srinivasan called us and expressed about his inconvenience to perform his concert , to fix an artist suitable with the accompaniments we fixed was of a great problem on that day. somehow we managed to do the show with the help of Mannarkoil Balaji who has fixed up Suryaprakash and he accepted with great mind.

The organizers face many difficulties while arranging music programs - Financial,logistics,sudden changes etc.They are unfairly criticized by we rasikas
if the program does not start on time or if there is interruption to honor sponsors or unavoidable speech due to compulsions.The incident highlights the cooperation of fellow artists in arranging a suitable substitute for the exigency. KUDOs to one and all for the successful completion of the program.

My observation

This is the last concert of the series.
Sriramkumar and Manoj siva were present at 18 15 hrs..
As usual TMK was at the Hall by 18 40 hrs. and he meticulously follows the timings.
Normally the secretary will receive a call at 18 55 hrs asking for the land mark to reach the venue
Today"s Hindu under events column published as Perumal Sangeetha Sabha instead of Perambur.
Thani at the beginning itself was not a surprise.
Kalyani and Sri Ranjani kritis were at a very slow tempo making Manoj difficult to fill the gap.
Sri Ramkumar took more then 10 mts to align 2 Tamburas
There were two sishyas on Tambura and one was following TMK
There were 120 Rasikas and as usual sat and enjoyed the performance till the end.
The concert started at 19 00 hrs and came to an end at 21 00 hrs.
In total the concert was excellent and SRK's Kalyani and Hamsadwani were good. Thani after RTP was quite enjoyable and Ghatam was very pleasing.

Very nice report - did he sing AlApana and tAnam in all 4 rAgas? Were there any rAgamAlikA svarams?

Small correction - the mangaLam is pavamAna and not bhavamAna (pavamAnau sutuDu paTTu pAdAravindamulaku nI nAma rupamulaku nitya jaya mangaLam - may there always be victory and auspiciousness to the lotus-like feet held by the son of vAyu, and to you name and form!)

Thanx for the correction. He sang Thanam in all the 4 Ragas with niraval and swarams. No extra ragas were handled.
