Re: R. Suryaprakash - Rasikalaya, London Sat, 27 June 2015
Just a few days later, I would have been able to be there.
Preston Road is one of my old-favourite places, and I would love to see this concert there.
Glad to see news of rasikalaya too.
On a side note... I will be in London, baring side-trips, for most of July. I'd be very grateful if London members could let me know of any temple, etc, musical events that may be happening.

Dear Nick
Please let me know when you are in London town. It will be good to meet up.
@ Nick:
If you are interested, you can go to London Sri Murugan Temple in East Ham who for the last 3 years have sponsored nadaswara and tavil vidwans as the resident artistes. They play every morning and evening during pooja times. Nearly 3 hours of solid music every evening. They also accept requests!
For my wedding reception held at the temple in Dec 2012, just my wife Uthra who loves Shri ragam, we were treated to a nearly 30min soulful rendition of Endaro replete with alapana.
Their address is 78 - 90 Church Road, Manor Park, London E12 6AF. Nearest station is East Ham on the District line and take the 147 bus towards Ilford which stops right outside the temple.
If you like Thirumurai isai (tevaram, tiruvachakam), London Sivan Koil in Lewisham, South East London has a resident Oduvar, Sri Swamy Dandapani who in addition to formally learning thirumurai isai also learnt under Dr S Ramanathan. He is on-par with any Oduvar in our opinion. Although thirumurai isai is sung using Panns, Sri Swamy Dandapani is also well-versed in Carnatic music and handles ragams like Karnaranjani, Abheri, Keeravani, Todi, Shanmukhapriya, Revati and Charukeshi with as much as ease as he does Mohanam, Shuddha Saveri, Kambhoji, Madhyamavati, Gambhira Nattai, Sourashtram, Athana (which are also Panns). He is based at the temple and sings during pooja times.
London Sivan Kovil is based at 4A Clarendon Rise, London SE13 5ES. Nearest station is Lewisham on the DLR and National Rail from London towards Kent. The temple is a 10min walk from the station.
I am a regular to these two temples, I am sure that other temples in London may also have artistes in-house that I may not be aware of.
Rishi

Thank you
I will be staying in Highgate, so Archway would be my nearest temple. I used to live in Manor Park, and know the Muragan Temple there, although I only visited the new building once or twice. I've been to the Lewisham Temple too, a few times

Nick,
You sound as if a visitor from India wants to know where one can find good dOsAs (also true in your case). I am glad you asked. We now have an idea about the many musical happenings in London. Sounds as if they have a vibrant scene in CM going on there everywhere!
Rishi,
I posted in the Events forum, seeing your post. Great to know that your wife is a rasikA of CM. Any news of Jayaram? Is he in the other continent now?
Nivedita,
Good to see your post. I wonder how many on Rasikas know that you are in London now (for those who wondered why you are not seen on Chennai TV any more). Very active abroad too, working, teaching music, involved in productions...
Hope you make it to Suryaprakash's concert...

London has, indeed, a vibrant musical scene. Remember, it was there that I learnt to enjoy Carnatic Music. However, apart from BVB, and some South Bank events, it is mostly a Sru-Lankan-community thing. I've been away from that grape vine for a decade now.
I guess that I do know where to find a good dosa, but all the restaurants may have changed now.
One thing, albeit not Carnatic, is that I hope to see Saswati Sen dance, on the day before I fly back home to Chennai

So Mohan, you are in the UK now?
Are you going to be able to make it this evening to Suryaprakash's concert? Or, is he coming to B'Ham to sing?
Remembering that rainy day concerts in honor of dear GBL (your father) in Chennai. You and your family made it a wonderful day for us on that day of incessant rain!
Gayathri Girish and Suryaprakash, the family and an HM group made it a very special day. Any pictures and clips?

Re: R. Suryaprakash - Rasikalaya, London Sat, 27 June 2015
Arasi madam, I am in UK and have been for 11/2 years now. I have the recordings and whereas some are very good, the others are not due to downpour that day. I meant to upload after checking with the artistes, but lost track of it all.
I will try to do them if I get some time.
Unfortunately I cannot go to SPs concert in London as I just landed from Japan after a conference.
I have just started to think about year 2 of Gobilalitha series.
Hope you will make it the coming year also.
Regards
Mohan

Hello Mohan... how long ago it seems since your great concert day was almost washed out, and I had to run home to prevent our house getting washed out! Will you come back for this December? Will you hold year-2 celebration in 15/16 season?
I don't have any plans to visit the Midlands, but I'll bear it in mind. Click on the "contact" icon to the right, and send me your address and contact details. I'd like to meet you again too
My one planned side trip is to Cornwall for a week.

Good to get all the news from you, Mohan!
Hope I can make it to Chennai this December. I look forward to this year's GBL memorial concert on a sunny day! Hope the venue isn't too far away from the hub...
How proud your father was of his gifted children!

Isn't that Doc Martin territory??Nick H wrote:My one planned side trip is to Cornwall for a week.

Mohan - UK must be an interesting change after S'Pore...
Please do keep us appraised of the second concert in the series, and upload the tracks from the first one when you can! I always think of Balu mama when I listen to a clip of hindi film music based on a rAga. Well, he was a blessed person who probably appreciated music everywhere and anywhere - from raindrops to crows cawing!

UK must be cold after Singapore.
Isn't Doc Martin something to do with boots?

The boots/footwear are Doc Martens.... While Doc Martin is a Brit Com filmed in the village of Port Isaac in Cornwall starring Martin Clunes as a cantenkerous city surgeon-turned-country GP.Nick H wrote:Isn't Doc Martin something to do with boots?
