Dear KSSR,

There are two good concerts on June 21 - Vijaya Siva at BGS arranged by SRLK and the one you have arranged at Nadasurabhi.

I meant senior not only by age but by virtuosity :)

Yes, she is great. I heard her recently in Nada neerajanam of SVBC. I skipped my walk and sat through the concert. The way she could introduce a simple but stunning sangathi when you least expect it, even in well established keerthanais was simply delightful.

Looking forward to it. I was told that her disciple Brinda Mackavachagan will be accompanying her. Also the concert is on the Trinity's compositions. Expect heavy stuff.

KSSR,
May I request that given the stature of the artiste and the theme of the concert, it will help if you would kindly record it and share it via S Priya or Youtube or Soundcloud or whatever. Such presentations will help a lot of people over a long period of time.
Thanks

Srimuladhara..Sri..Dikskithar was the opening piece.
There was an Atana number?
Sri Thyagarajaya namasthe in Begada
The vocalist sang in strict classical flavour within her voice range. Aishwarya and Brinda sand along in unison and the effect was good.
கச்சிதமாக பாந்தமாக இருந்தது.
All said and done, singing compositions of trinity has a charm.

Vidushi Suguna Varadachari, one of the senior most vocalists to propagate the “Musuri Subramanya Iyer’s style” of singing was in Bengaluru to perform for Nadasurabhi on Sunday, 21st June 2015. She began the concert with a composition in the auspicious raga ‘Sri’, invoking lord Ganesha, as tradition would demand. The stamp of classicism was demonstrated right from the beginning. She next went to a sweet Thyagarja composition ‘Muddumomu’ which was handled gently. She moved on to present several heavy songs with adequate measure of ‘Raga alapana’ and short but heavy doses of ‘swara prastharas’ - simple and not very intricate. The ‘neravals’ were done at most appropriate places for a few songs. For an artist of her stature who is very well equipped with both ‘Lakshya’ and ‘Lakshana’ of music nothing could go wrong. The selection of songs, ragas, propriety of ‘manodharma’ were all precise. Each song was presented with utmost authority and confidence and the ‘sangathis’ included were beautiful. There was a satisfactory feeling of experiencing authenticity with her presentation of compositions. This was particularly true with Shamasastri’s Talli ninnu….. and Tulasi bilwa of Thyagaraja. So was it with the song in Manji.

The two young ladies who gave her vocal support were Smt.Suguna Varadachari’s prime disciples. Ms. Aishwarya Shankar and Ms. Brinda Manckavachagan were very well trained and ably supported her . They were very competent in filling up where ever necessary.

Violinist, Vidwan B. Raghuram was brilliant in his following. His fine sketching of the ragas and perfection in following the nuances sung by the artist were highly appreciable. Vidwan H.S. Sudhindra on the mridangam had the perfect understanding of the mood of the song as well as the artist. His keen observation of her subtle usages helped him reflect the same on his instrument. So also Vidwan Omkar Rao with his efficient support rose to the occasion. The ‘Tani avartanam’ by the percussionists was highly enjoyable.

Overall, it was a top class concert, very well attended and highly appreciated by one and all.

As kharaharapriya usually fills a main or a submain position, it is very very rare to end with a tukkada in kharaharapriya. I have never heard this song, by any chance is this Pahi Rama rama yanuchu an utsava sampradaya krithi. Was this sung by Musiri in historic past.
Tx hariniraghavan for your review. Musiri was known for neraval - looks vidushi suguna V exactly gave you that.

rajeshnat, it is a 'Divya naama samkeertanam'. It is indeed rare to close a concert with 'karaharapriya', but usually divya nama samkeertanams are rendered towards the end. There are a couple of these in main ragas like Shankarabharanam, Varali, Sourashtram and so on.
Yes, coming from the Musiri school, 'neravals' would be expected. Her neravals were very apt and beautiful!
