2hr 45 min Concert.
It was indeed a grand concert by Dr.Palghat Ramprasad, steeped in tradition !
Started off with Saveri Varnam, followed by Rama Nannu Brovara and Mamava Meenakshi.
Brisk Niraval, Swaram in Rama Nannu Brovara . seemed like a snap-shot of what was going to come later.
Mamava Meenakshi in Varali was rendered with poise.
Main piece was Suki Evvaro, with Thani.
Both Dr. Ramprasad and the violinist Hemmige Sri Srivatsan brought out the beauty of Kanada very well in their aalapanas.
The Niraval swarams in Kanada were very soothing and made a lasting impression.
Thani by the double Mridangam was energetic, engaging and showcased Thisra Nadai very well.
Senior Vidwan Sri.Narendran who had accompanied 5 generations of musicians played
with lot of Gambeeram and with high rhythmic standards.
The younger Mridangist Varun Viswanath( who had played for Sri.OST in his arangetram in Chennai in 2012, ) played confidently and well, bagged a few Bale and Sabash from the fellow artists.
"Srikrishnam Baja manasa sathatham" - RTP in Thodi
RTP was elaborate and was excellently done with Raagamalika. in 4 Ragas, and Sindubairavi stood out. Again, the violinist palyed with apt response
and imaginatively.
Bhavayamai Gopalapalam was very soulful.
Kankasabai in Surutti was a fitting end piece.
The concert was a witness to 2 different layam banis (Palghat Ragu & Sarvalaghu) coming together very well.
All in all, it was an enjoyable concert with a sumptuous treat !
-----------------------------------------
The Chief guest for the concert was Sri.Ramesh Srinivasan, the founder of Sarvalaghu Percussion arts center in San Jose.
He did the honors for the artists of the evening and spoke briefly and noted that the concert was amazing and gelled very well.
Sri. Narendran spoke briefly about Varun’s performance and his comment was:
(“Amogama Vasichaan, naanga practice kooda pannale, to be frank, irundaalum romba nanna vasichan” and blessed him.
He also mentioned that kudos goes to his Guru and the parents for his wonderful performance.
Dr. UshaLakshmi, (disciple of TRS) a visiting artist from India happened to be at the concert and commented that youngster Varun played well. She also noted that RTP in Kanda Nadai was no ordinary feat and commended the team for rendering it well. She mentioned that Dr.Ramprasad brought out Sindhu Bairavi beautifully in the Pallavi .
--------------------------------------------
Thanks to the organisers Sathyanathan & Siva, they did a wonderful job setting this concert up at SDK in Sunnyvale, CA and bringing the team together in a short time. Would like to see more concerts like this in the Bay area with a high caliber performing team.

There are very rare instances of musicians singing neraval for sukhi evaro. When u said Neraval i was thinking of hearing it . But he has not sung neraval as mentioned by you . The swaras was quite gA gA with a lovely deep throated male pitch voice and a lovely azhuttam from Hemmige srivatsan (Lalgudi flashes is indeed there). The krith sukhi evarO rendition was not that top class as gA gA swaras.sudora wrote: Suki Evvaro (Thani) – kanada – Adi - Thyagaraja

Will move on to pallavi when i have time in a day or two.
Keep it up team. My interest in listening to Palghat Ramprasad is only going up, also Hemmige Srivatsan (whom I know very little). Thanks to mrudangam duo of vidwan narendran and Varun.

I hear you sir!! And totally agree with you on the sukhi evvaro neraval rarity bit. However, I have heard Ramaprasad sing lovely neravals many a time at "Sathyamu thappaga". He must have omitted it due to time pressure or something. I think I can confidently say that Ramaprasad is one the best neravals singers of his generation.rajeshnat wrote:There are very rare instances of musicians singing neraval for sukhi evaro. To the best of my knowledge Two generations before - musicians have not sing neraval for sukhi evarO(GNB MMI etc - some one can correct me if I am wrong there) . For me the first time I heard neraval for this song was when Prasanna Venkataraman sang neraval in the pallavi line sukhi evarAo rAmA(Tx to Prasanna he gave that extra kAnadA bliss - six years back) . Then a year or two back I heard a neraval in nityamaina susvarapu gAnamutO by suryaprakash. I think satyamu tappaka by Ramaprasad would have been awesome. My memory is bit hazy I think Neyveli santhanagopalan and TNS have also sung neraval in sukhi evarO.
This sukhi evarO is one krithi where the divine T has given a master piece - you can take up neraval at almost any line and kAnaDA shines special in neraval and with swaras it goes to stratosphere. If you have the Ramaprasad neraval of sathyamu tappaka ,please push it in ramaprasad thread in vidwan and vidushi, looking forward to hear it .
Ramaprasad strength is his strong undercurrent sangathis and he has a special aural charm when he dwells bit more .I am pretty sure he is a fine singer of his generation in many aspects.

Folks, I apologise for the typo (cut & paste error from an earlier line). It is obvious from the recording Dr.Ramprasad didn't do Niraval for Suki Evvaro. I didn't mean to misrepresent it. What I expressed as soothing was for the swarams, ofcourse.
