It is almost 5 to 6 weeks since stepping out for a live concert in this 'fading mecca land of CM - chennai'. It was saturday the rain was not there ,the health of the family was just ok with no viral infections .Most importantly there was no birthday party hosted by any of the friends of young kid's during this weekend (I have a young kid). Looking at the hindu there were few choices in the evening go to priya sisters at 04:45 pm and continue with sangeetha upanyasam of visaka hari at 7 pm in BSU. In sastri hall two upcoming singers were singing at 04:30 and 06:30. The fading mecca land of CM did not have a concert in ragasudha(I repeat even ragasudha did not have),NGS- Mini, PS High School, Mudhra , SKGS,hamsadhwani. For a change there was three dramas to choose from crazy mohan google gadothgajan, sve shekar drama and one more drama titled perumAlE. There was a dance by zakir husssain . To sum up In the evening post 6 pm , there was 3 dramas, 1 dance and only 2 cm concerts to choose.Thank god we have Arkay Ramakrishnan who is the only saviour to call this city as atleast fading mecca of CM with his madhuradhwani sabha.
Tadepally Lokanadha sarma comes from chitoor school ,the influence of that school is there with a touch of madurai somu - chitoor subramania pillai kind of piDis (which i like), but there was also a lot of musicologist approch of word splitting where perhaps his search for meaning and bhakthi was bit way too high than the permissible non musical limit (which i donot like).
Arkay ramakrishnan said at the start that Tadepally can quickly test the mike and get started , after a pause Tadepally sang few phrases in taanam and i enjoyed it , but he just tested and then began with an alapana . Voice throw was there and I enjoyed his throw and bhavam in the alapana. He segued with an AC krithi in nattai, there was certainly few slips towards the end in taalam that was quite pronounced. He next went into telisi rama starting with anupallavi line talapu ninnu . Poornachandrika was a solar eclipse day he quickly wrapped up
He next went to haikAMbodhi starting with nannu brova RA , the neraval was not the usual line that i am acclimitized . He repeated with few key phrases like tappu panulu , there was more a musicologist approach there the musical quotient of harikambodhi was bit low. There was a lot of flat note swaras towards the end certainly enjoyable but I found it difficult to keep with me the harikAmbodhi reference
The main alapana start was very varali but at times with a liberal brake he slightly went into pantuvarali .The krithi was shyama sastri masterpiece in varAli at many places in neraval and swaras i could notice he trespassing liberally to few subhapantuvarali sangatis .
The last slokham was long and indeed was the pick of the concert . Nalla anubavichu pAdinar (He was in a zone with lot of sangathis where he enjoyed) and perhaps another copper plate krithi of charukEsi was not that colorful finish. I am bit allergic to copperplate vageyakkara i want to hear more raja margamu typecast vageyakkara when it comes to telugu.
VL Kumar was very good , particulary i could appreciate he returning with confidence only the varALi when there was a liberal passing of subhapantuvarali by vocalist. Tanjore kumar could have got in more theermanam , he played more like a veena concert but however there was lovely tone in his mrudangam
Three things that could have been better :

1.It would have been lovely if Tadepally had zoned bit more with his chitoor /somu daredevil approach which he did in my last two concerts , but yesterday a bit more focus on splitting words was not that musical to me .
2. Also in harikAmbodhi when he sang the full krithi and went to neraval he taking a big book and starting to turn pages and reading and going with neraval was bit of bonkers to me . The stagecraft demands more music and what isthe point in referring a book that too with neraval being on .
3. Taanam was used only for microphone testing. HE ended at 08:35 pm he could have gone for a RTP.Arkay Ramakrishnan would not mind.
All said Tadepally has an unpretentious approach to music . He seeks divinity in his own way and I also as a rasika seek divinity . I prefer it to have a lining but he prefers bit more than that which I donot get it. There were too much of sangathis that fell as prose than as krithi.Perhaps if I know telugu i could have enjoyed more.
Overall a good to very good concert for 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Great to have you back in the review circle. Do not be overwhelmed by kid's parties. It shows how popular your daughter is among peers
Also, she will grow up so quickly that you will find time to go to concerts...
Chennai is generating less number of concerts it seems, but please do not sound so bleak about the CM capitol. After all, there are more and more younger singers who are serious about their craft. Let them be cheered rather than be subjected to discouraging statements from die hard rasikAs like you. The music will go on, just as not having the means did not stop parents from getting their daughters married (borrowing, begging).
