A Happy, healthy 2016 to all!
To all fellow rasikAs (how many friends here!).
And to the music makers...
How custom rules us! First of January still remains the new year to wish each other--a western custom which became ours. Yet, some of us do not brook the coming in of any northern rAgA into CM's realm and somehow, kApi and behAg don't get punished--lucky ones
A happy one, again

May we have many happy new years, and may our homes, where-ever they are in this now meteorologically turbulent world, remain safe and dry

It is nothing but the Winter Solstice celebrated in all Pagan cultures. We were just behind noticing the apparent turn back of Surya! or it may be the 60 year rolling Alamanac. Happy Makara Sankranti and Thai Pongal to all!arasi wrote:A Happy, healthy 2016 to all!

Our Makara Sankranti is following a calendar that is 1800 years too old, the Uttarayana now starts on Dec 22.

Re: Happy New Year 2016!
I think that is more true about christmas. If one is going to impose one's religion, it makes sense to change people's perceptions of existing festivals. I have a feeling we have done this culture-imposition/conversion thing to death in more serious threads,, and I am not trying to restart here. But the solstice is 21 December, much closer to 25th than to 1st Jan. Of course, calendars have changed over centuries. Come to think of it, eleven days was lost in the last major calender change, and perhaps that accounts for it. Or was it gained? I don't know!shankarank wrote:It is nothing but the Winter Solstice celebrated in all Pagan cultures. So we are stuck with this calendar, internationally, whatever alternatives the world offers, and whatever alternatives are actually in use by some countries. Some countries who do not have a traditional (how old is tradition: cf previous mention of culture theft, it happened to Europe too) christian base also make a big thing of Jan 1st as new year. The Japanese party even harder than the Scottish!
Nobody ever says no to the religion-based public holidays, whether it is their religion or not. Everybody likes a good party, whether it is their culture or not.
Yes, the sun (or rather, the earth) and the calendar have moved on... Happy Pongal to all!
