Meaning and clarifications in Nada Murali by Oothukkadu Venkatakavi

Post by Suryasriram »

Oothukkadu Venkatakavi has composed a very beautiful song in Hamirkalyani, Nada Murali Gana Vilola, the lyrics of which are given below: (sourced from venkatakavi.org)

Pallavi:
nāda murali gāna vilōlā kalyāṇa krshṇa
nārada muni sannuta varabāla gōpāla

Anupallavi
mādhava madhusoodana harē mukunda
mangaḷa varadāyaka prabhō giridhara gōpāla

Madhyamakala Sahitya
tākiṭṭa taritajuṇu tām tattatdheem
tai P,MMM,MM, RRSṆ
tākiṭṭa taritakajooṇu tām tattatdheem
tai tai tayya kāla
tākiṭṭa taritakajooṇu tām tattatdheem
M,G P,M GMPD N,S, tākiṭṭa
taritakajaṇu tadhingiṇa tom
tākiṭṭa taritakajooṇu tadhingiṇatom
tākiṭṭa taritakajaṇu tadhingiṇatom

Charanam:
manda gamana jita vāraṇē bhava bandha bhayaharaṇa nivāraṇē ati
sundara manmatha roopiṇē mukhamanda hāsa dyuti dhāriṇē bhuvi
kāraṇē giridhāriṇē
taka dheemta dheemta taka dheemta dheemta taka
tām tadhingiṇatom tām
tadhingiṇatom tām tadhingiṇatom tām
SS,S PP,P DD,D PDPP MM,G PP,M GMPDN,Ṡ,
ṇakaṇakaṇakaṇām ṇikiṇiki
ṇikiṇeem vara noopura kankaṇa
kinkiṇi chalanga shabda
vichitram tām kiṭataka tarikiṭatom
tarikiṭa takajuṇu
kiṭataka tarikiṭa tom tarikiṭa takajuṇu
kiṭataka tarikiṭa tom tarikiṭa takajuṇu

Could someone translate the song?

Also, while the Pallavi and Anupallavi are in Sambodhana Vibhakti (addressing Krsna), the Charanam takes many vibhaktis. For example, Mandagamana Jita Varane is in Saptami (7th) Vibhakti (locative case, or upon Krsna), and the next line, Sundara Manmatha Rupine is in Chaturthi (4th) Vibhakti (Dative case, or offering to Krsna). Simlarly Bhuvi Karane and Giridharine alternate between 7th and 4th Vibhaktis. So the meaning becomes obscure, something like, "(Meditate) upon the cause of the world, for the bearer of Govardhana," which doesn't make sense.

So could anyone explain the significance of the conflicting Vibhaktis?

P.S. I know even Muttusvami Dikshitar has used this technique, but generally what I have observed is he sticks to one particular Vibhakti per paragraph, whereas here they keep changing.

You're right that the prayer begins with an address to Krishna in the vocative case.
In charana, I feel the words giridhāriṇe etc. are in dative case (4th vibhakti eg I bow down to the one.. ..) The verb which is missing eg namaḥ has to be assumed.
Classic example of dative case: tasmai zrIgurave namaḥ.
I think some words are misstyped. They should be
jitavairiṇe etc.

Declension pattern of nivārin
(Masculine) Singular . Dual Plural
Nominative nivārī nivāriṇau nivāriṇaḥ
Vocative . . . . nivārin nivāriṇau nivāriṇaḥ
Accusative nivāriṇam nivāriṇau nivāriṇaḥ
Instrumental nivāriṇā nivāribhyām nivāribhiḥ
Dative. . nivāriṇe nivāribhyām nivāribhyaḥ
Ablative. nivāriṇaḥ nivāribhyām nivāribhyaḥ
Genitive. . . . nivāriṇaḥ nivāriṇoḥ nivāriṇām
Locative. nivāriṇi nivāriṇoḥ nivāriṣu

I don't think any noun/compound noun is in locative case. You need to just correct the typos.
The noun root is eg - kārin not - kāraṇ, hope you follow me.

@Rsachi Thank you so much for that. Could you translate the song with those corrections if possible?

Also if there are corrections in the song someone must get Ravikiran Sir to see this.
