Amrutha Venkatesh : ISS Purandara Awardee's concert 29 Jan

Amrutha gave a sparkling concert y'day with HM Smita, Arjun Ganesh, ghatam vidwan whose name I didn't catch, sorry, and a charming musically inclined young lady on the tambura.

My usual peeve about doddering and tottering audiences and mobile phones was also voiced by the announcer which endeared me to ISS! Goodish crowd. No speeches. Bravo!

What a Jagadanandakaraka as an opener! I enjoyed every word of it.

A LOVELY Malayamaruta (Swati song). A beautiful Kalyani (Nambi Kettavar) & Sriranjani (Talabeku). Pantuvarali main (Saroruhasana jaaye). GNB's Ni padame gati Nalinakanti. Sindhu bhairavi RTP full of very lovely moments. Tana malika (I didn't bother to list ragas). BMK tillana in Dwijavanti after Raagitandira (Nadanamakriya) and Baro Krishnayya. Mangalam.

I always harbour misgivings before the concerts of my favourite musicians just as I used to be nervous before Nadal or Sachin took the field. I don't want them to fail.

Amrutha didn't fail. She hit a century if you ask me. She is good in every aspect of Carnatic music. She sings robust Peaberry-pure Carnatic music. She has deep resources of voice and manodharma at her beck and call. Truly defines the expression "mastery confers ease".

Her music has incorporated so many best bits of instrumental masters (MSG, Mandolin Shrinivas, Veena and flute virtuosos) that she can give a tough time to the violinist.

Arjun Ganesh is a very effective, decorative, mridangam accompanist.

The concert made me feel good indeed.

30 and 31Jan have lots of concerts morning to night in Chowdiah - Samagana Samaya. Many I know are heading there. Not me. I am travelling.
