The Hindustani violin: masters and their music

Post by Rsachi »

Dear rasikas,
I am posting this in the General Discussions as I think many others may share my curiosity in general about the violinists in Hindustani music. The legends like N. Rajam and M.S. Gopalakrishnan come to our minds. But how about listing and discussing music of these legends as well as others'? With links to tracks, interviews and articles?

I want to start with Ms Kala Ramnath. I heard a few tracks and I think she is amazing.

Please let us listen and discuss these interviews and tracks:

Yes, Ravi. Taught first by grandfather Narayana Iyer, then aunt N. Rajam and later went for higher training for 15+ years with Pandit Jasraj.

This video is special, N Rajam is so articulate. Have seen it a few times before.

They also broadcast her concert with daughter and granddaughter/s often on DD Bharati, which was filmed after she started sitting on a chair while playing.

Kala Ramnath YT link (second one) is fabulous. Also the third video (one featuring Madhuvanti.)

What a lot of talent in one greater family!

What grace! Blemishless music by Dr. Rajam.
Varsha-ji: Some years ago, you posted an amazing live version of Chhayanat of hers. Sheer joy. Every time I listen to it feels like the first time I heard it. There are few in the world that can produce that kind of freshness in their music.

and discussing music of
I must confess that I am not a big fan of violin in hm. It is like a two dimensional instrument measuring a three dimension figure- speaking in engineering terms.
It cannot mimic the swirl or waft of air as aesthetically as a flute. Resulting in tu-tu , chik chik phrases.
btw ..for these reasons , post 1980 chaurasia is no match to his early days . Pandit Jagannath(and Anant Lal ) will always be more adorable than Bismillah khan.

To get a better picture watch the violin in this track.

Two decades ago a friend alerted me on this broadcast and I caught 10 mts before it was cut short for the midnight news bulletin.( Hope someone with muscle at dd trvdrum can salvage this full program)
An amazing piece for other reasons as well ( carpet bombing of the sruti by the three swaramandals, tasteful dias that one can expect only in kerala , kishori hugging her swarmandal like a child ,the rallying of accompanying vocalists...) .
See how the violinist keeps drawing her silky appreciation .Sometimes just a nod. This more-than-three dimensional music is beyond the violin.
Some , including legends achieve an approximation under the form of a style. And with duets that depend heavily on sitar harmonium etc.
And those who are not legends , are so tough on the ear :? My personal opinions though.

Will move to other artists as you develop this thread.

Varsha,
really? You think the violin in HM is two-dimensional? Interesting opinion.
Kindly listen to this track and we will discuss it here along with other keen rasika-friends! (Click the pic to play):

I do concede that no instrument can reproduce all the nuances of a beautiful voice, with its maatu, dhaatu and chetu! (चेतु m. heedfulness RV. ix , 81 , 3. M.W)

Of course N.Rajam has performed in the Academy. I heard her in 1990 or 91 during the December season.

Thanks.I stand corrected.
violin in HM is two-dimensional?
Obviously you have never sat through a 3 hour concert in hm violin :P
Anyway let me be clear that it is the instrument I speak of .And these being personal opinions.

For that matter , violin accompaniment to chitraveena gives me the same discomfort. And I am making no value judgement on the artists .Simply wish Akkarai would accompany Ravikiran with a sarangi
People use the gayaki ang description a bit loosely to my taste.
I prefer to use this template of the six degrees of freedom to describe gayakis capability.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7BX6CnvRk0
Call it the nth degree of freedom
Here is an example of the voice itself aiming for n minus something.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/qq6gd ... garAja.mp3
And here a voice NOT aiming for gayaki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrCH4rsV5J0

MSG had his way out with the alap jhor jhala format.
Rajams style has chosen a brave approach towards gayaki , but the instrument is the obstacle.
More later , as more holes are punched in my argument

Varsha,
I daresay my "intolerance" towards a 3 hour HM violin concert is occasioned purely by the absence of sufficient drama. Imagine that there are two children locked up in a house. One is sliding up and down the bannister constantly. The other goes on thumping the dining table Na Dhin Dhin Na....endlessly.

I have been quoted as saying that I can stand such a Hindustani concert for about 10 minutes. (ಹಾವು ಸಾಯೊಲ್ಲ ಕೋಲು ಮುರಿಯೊಲ್ಲ)

I attended an MSG violin HM solo in IIT Delhi in 1976/77. I went through the emotions you have suggested.

The Carnatic music concert resurrects itself with huge drama. Songs aplenty. Singers gesticulating wildly. Blaring sound. The violinist is like an indomitable policeman chasing the ever elusive thief. The mridangam player looks obviously restless during the alapana bits. The ghatam guy is the only one paid to listen to the concert carefully. There is plenty of perspiration, partly due to the weather and partly due to the musical gymnastics. Lyrics are thrown at us with obscure ragas and obscurer meanings. So many languages. So many people putting wrong tala. So many people constantly milling about in the auditorium. Listener's request chits passed on willy nilly to the stage. So much electronics too on the stage, kindling our curiosity about make, model, software version, app version, etc. etc.

Comparing a Carnatic concert to a Hindustani violin concert is as interesting as comparing a Tamil movie shot in Gevacolour in '60s with Shivaji and Padmini and 18 songs and 7 fights and 3 soliloquies - comparing it to a BW classic of Ingmar Bergman.

Having said all this, I rest my case in defence of the violin. It is but a mere accessory to the crime of inflicting ennui.

Here is an artist making a case for inward drama . Images from my life float past me,as I listen.

The carnatic angle to gAyaki can be discerned in this duet of tnk-nrajam.
And by that I mean TNKs charm lies a great deal on the fact that the listener is induced to sing. :)
TNK ...perfect example of cm with a hm twang...Surati,Todi , bilahari.....take such gorgeous hues.

Also ...An interesting track where kalpagam mami sings along .To great effect .

Great thread.

The dEvgiri bilAwal video of N. Rajam is one of my favourites; there is a certain warmth and affection that Rajam exudes when playing, both with respect to her co-musicians on stage and to the music itself. Is this raga close to our bilahari?

I've recently been hooked to her interpretation of jhinjhOti:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLZwqRD__5g

I agree that the violin doesn't have all the dimensions and depth that the human voice has, both in HM and in CM. But the music I've heard from the likes of Rajam and MSG has been very impressive in its own right, and very emotional and memorable. But when it comes to HM, my absolute favourite artiste is Nikhil Banerjee, who caresses the sitar with such love and plays with the contemplation that I have only really experienced with Trivandrum Venkataraman's music. I'm pretty sure I've listened to every track of his on YouTube.

With jugalbandis, I agree that the Ravikiran-Gaurav Mazumdar duet is special. The best jugalbandi I've heard was the two of them playing kharaharapriya/kAfi in San Diego several years ago. Sheer magic, with the one replaying the other's phrases in his own style, but somehow melding so beautifully in the pallavi. I've also loved the TNK-Rajam duets (an AIR broadcast of kAnaDa from the 80s, and another of kalyANi come to mind readily).

When it comes to VG Jog, this jaijawanti with Bismillah Khan has a special place in my heart:
