Post by S.NAGESWARAN »

Dear Rasikas,

There was a lecture demonstration of " A CAPELLA TWIST TO THYAGARAJA KRITHI " by Sri V.S NARASIMHAN,
the renowned Violinist at the ARKEY CONVENTION CENTRE FROM 10.30.AM TO 12.30 PM.

There were many musicians like Sri V.V Subramanyam, Violinist, Sri R.Parthasarathy, veena artist, Sai sharan, Sriram Parthasarathy etc.who attended the lecture demonstration.

Sri V.S.Narasimhan explained about the "CAPELLA " Music.

The music is sung by vocal choir group of singers giving effects of harmony, instrumental sounds etc vocally.

Sri V.S.Narasimhan traced the history of Capella music over 3000 years and demonstrated by suitable video clips.

Sri V.S.Narasimhan, composed the Capella music of the kriti " Brova Bharamma" sung by the leading vocalist
Sri Sriram Parthasarathy and choir group male singers. The entire audience applauded the efforts of
Si V.S.Narasimhan in bringing out such a novel music.

The " BROVA BARAMMA Capella music is available for download from the " String Temple " website.

The "a" here is not the indefinite article as in a/an, it is part of the phrase a capella.

But one can make worse mistakes, and, for many years of my life I did: thinking that it was probably the name of a town somewhere in South America! Then for another several years, I knew that it meant singing unaccompanied by instruments, but not its original meaning.

Here is Google's wisdom:
A cappella [a kkapˈpɛlla] (Italian for "in the manner of the chapel") music is specifically group or solo singing without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. It contrasts with cantata, which is accompanied singing.

The Hindu makes the same mistake. Well, that is to be expected of The Hindu these days --- but never mind, it is the music that counts!

A modern (although not very ;)) example of a capella performance is Barber's Shop Quartet. (link to a Youtube search)

I'm fond of the work of The Spooky Men's Chorale (link to a Youtube search).
