Desh Thillana - Carnatic music on iPad 1st time ever by Navneeth Sundar - Animoog App

I understand it is absurd to accord this app with a game changer honor. Nevertheless, It is so wonderful to see just a few swipes and you get a music. It is absolutely possible if more efforts were to be put in by musicians and techies, with an open mind. Just imagine , you plug an earphone while sitting in the flight and do a few swipes to quitely practise music and create music.

At one time , I thought that the swipe keyin smart phones will never succeed, and that is the only thing I do know. It is such a breeze when you get a handle of it.

Some will vilify it and some might do the opposite. But big changes are there to come ... Change is permanent and the speed of change is ....

Arun and I were very early adopters of such slide based apps trying CM gamakas on them including Apple's Garage band with mixed results. The Desh thillana on this instrument sounds quite natural without too much of the artificiality. From what I have seen so far, this app comes with tremendous customizing and programming capabilities using which one can create patches for the desired effects. It looks like the Desh thillana was played using a Desh specific patch. Such facilities are very interesting. May be some gamakas can be baked in the patch with parameters ( like pressure ( for vallinam, mellinam etc. ), amptitude and frequency of oscillations ). This way it does not sound too mechanical and the final output comes out of the technical and artistic capabilities of the musician.

The price of the app and the add-ons are not expensive. And it comes from Moog Music, a well known top of the line music instruments and software company. That is the incredible thing about these things nowadays. For the cost of a couple of meals, one can buy such high end features. We will have to see if such features can be used to make sounds that are natural and pleasing to the ear and provide flexibility to the musician that are absent in physical instruments. I will have to spend a lot more time with the app to glean further insights.

Indeed these are inexpensive for all that you get. That is the reason I avoid excitedly crowding my machine with such softwares ( I have already have ) , while ending up trying out nothing. So , I am prudent in my purchases. Inexpensive is both boon and bane. Thanks VK
