Who moved my Carnatic music

Post by Rsachi »

A thread to hang by...

Magsaysay says that Carnatic music has been saved from the ghetto of brahmins.

Rahman sings Dil Se and Jai Ho to commemorate MSS at UN whose immmortal images shine in my mind from 60 years ago. And everyone is thrilled. I don't even get to hear/see that ARR concert (yet.)

Carnatic music is being liberalised in so many ways. And finally, I am left wondering who moved my Carnatic music?

Do you feel as stupid as I do?

Or as stupid as RD Burman who felt ghettoed by his cabaret numbers' success, when all he wanted to do was compose classical music based film songs?

Or as stupid aa some of those who went to Unnati and came away wondering whether it was Mukhari or Bhairavi or what?

Another irksome discussion. But remember this is becoming a rat race :D

The spirit of carnatic music died a long time ago. What walks around now are just zombies.

Some very good zombies, but zombies all the same.

And, as they say in Royal families, 'Long live CM'

A lot of good music seems to be around. The veenotsava concerts are interesting. Several youngsters sing soulfully. Even the best of singers have off days. Sanjay was asked this question in MMU about the dearth of golden singers. He said, 'I went to a local cricket match yesterday. There someone was saying that we do not have players like Srinivasan today. Such comments are made in all fields.' VVS quotes SSI saying that CM will never die. At the moment it looks well said.

Dear Rsachi,

The original book title refers to cheese, and I haven't really read that book. But you did mention rat race at the end of your post. I think rats don't really complain about moving cheese, they just move with the cheese, or at least keep looking. Some like bala747 and I seem to have opted out, but I don't think that's a good strategy. The only way is forward and the only thing one can do as an individual is be better and try to act in ways pleasing to oneself, which is still possible (at least in India), most of the time. I don't really see any hurdle in this. The opportunities to listen, interact, study and learn seem to be increasing, not decreasing. Any conceivable taste can usually be indulged in with like minded people (sounds a bit kinky, but you know what I mean), and for each person, their lifetime is the golden age! So just look around for the cheese, it may not be far away, or try marmite or nutella or something else, but keep moving and keep eating a little at a time is advice from one rat to another.
