Re: Abhilash Giriprasad @ Arkay Convention Center
Have gone through part of it. The Carnatic Idol runner up from 2010 or so. The child voice was sweeter. He is going thru the first voice break phase I guess. Very strong layam boy!
Interesting split of khanDam and tiSram ( 4 *5 + 4*3 = 4 * 8) formula for the varNam!! - assuming I understood it correctly. Not sure if all vaRNams can split that way - there should be a kArvai at 5 | 3 split position on the entire Avarta??
Since I heard it last week - need to recollect by re-listening.
Some impressions about the heccarika with the famed khanDa Ekam. Similar to this : https://youtu.be/-UNM3Gbo1CQ?t=1281. In the TNS case the speed is such it can very well be sung in khanDa cApu. If the objective of reckoning in khanDa Ekam is to get some chowkam , it gets defeated when they use that space to do a brighA ( or fast ornamentation) landing - something not very sipid for a rAgam like YKK.
The freedom given to do this in khanDa Ekam should be withdrawn
. iDattai koDuttAl maDattai piDittanarAm! Ongi oru cApu vecchu - khanDa cAputAnnu solla vEnDiyatutAn !
Aravinda patra nayanam in sEShAcala nAyakam smarAmi - had an interesting swara rounds with pA - dA - ravinda patra - where it was meaningfully stopped at patra without the nayanam - pA - dA - being swarAksharams - where it means pAdAravinda patra ( tulasi at his lotus feet!)
Will listen rest more intently and comment.

It should be khaNDa, right?
AFAIK, kanTaka (kanTam) refers to a thorn

Thanks - I was tentative myself when I used kanTam - but willfully lazy to correct it - even as I was correcting other things. I did use kanDam at one place - kanDittatu kanDam ( from the TNS Syama SAstri Lec Dem was on the back of my mind) - so treated it as a word of tamizh origin.
In a sense - oru kanDippAna kanDam tEvai oru cApuvudan
Fixed few others too!

Re: Abhilash Giriprasad @ Arkay Convention Center
khaNDa was used with Sila khaNDa - a piece of rock or stone. What could be its association with the number five?. The five different stones in SAligrAma pUja, pancAyatana pUja?rshankar wrote:It should be khaNDa, right?

Such etymologies are common elsewhere in music. For E.g : Quoting Sri SRJ from a Lec Dem. Udu - a constellation of five stars - Audava - a pentatonic scale.
