Sanjay Subramanyan - Kartik Fine Arts

Post by grsastrigal »

Carnatic music fraternity was divided into two whether to conduct music programmes during the 3 day mourning due to the demise of CM

Like Brahma Gana sabha, rAga SudhA and few other sabhAs cancelled as I could see from The Hindu, Karthik Fine Arts (KFA) continued its programme yesterday with Sanjay Subramanyan. In some cases, i heard even the artists refused to participate as it is today, Aruna Sairam’s (KFA-6.45 PM ) programme cancelled

My view was to cancel these programmes as we do not know what happens during the programme besides respecting the departed soul. Moreover, as old people are attending the concerts, safety is paramount importance.

But I did attend the programme (with a fear in my mind) !!

Before going to the list, few synopsis:

• Few funny movements during his sahAna-RTP. While rAgA rendering, SS rendered the note of “pArthEn, sirithEn”-a famous sahAna rAga-Cinema song (Film-vEERa abhimanyu). At the end of RTP, he finished with Sindhu bhairavi. He took the famous “Sivaji-manOramA”-Sindhu bhairavi (SB), nAdaswara notes in the famous TillAna mOhanAmbAl and Violin repeated with ever-famous- BAlamurali krishna’s “national integration”- song “isaidhAn na(u)m iruvarin”….(a beautiful SB by late BMK). At the end, BMK finishes with “isai” in a more beautiful way. Sanjay tried but could not succeed !!!

• The entire excercise was acknowledged by big thunder of applause by rasikAs.

• Kokilapriya as the second sub-main (or main) before RTP dAśarathE dayA śAradhE- Thyagarajar kriti and the ragam and swaram were amazing.

Thanjavur murugabhoobhathy-Mridhangam
R.Ragul-Violin
Tiruppanithura rAdhAkrishnan-Ghatam

I have not heard Ragul in concerts. Though he was smart enough in handling return (of ragam), Varadharajan’s “azuttham” was missing. He tried his level best, anyway. May be more concerts will bring close to SS’ kaNakkus and his high speed pudIs. SS did appreciate the violinist many times during the concert.

-MukhAri varNam- (it had kAmAkshi in between)- (do not know this varNam as I entered half-way through)
-budhamAshrayAmi-MD-navagraha kriti – in line with Wednesday. (S) –nattakurinji.
-Sudha dhanyasi rAgam followed by sAmOdham chintayAmi- Swathi thirunAl.
-saRRE vilagi-pUrvikalyAni-GKB (nandanAr charitram)- neraval in “bhaktiyil karai kaNdavan… (S)
-kOkilapriyA rAgam followed by dAsarathE dayA zAradhE- (S)-Thyagarajar
Tani
-avan seyalanRi ore aNuvum-Amir kalyAni-HMB
RTP-SahAna-“ Vandanumu….chandanA”-famous Thyagarajar kriti’s lines were taken in pallavi, he shifted to Atana, hindolam, kApi, Sindubairavi.- and rendered the full kriti
-vaNNa mAdangal sUzh-pAsuram-mOhanam
-started Adum mayilAi. Followed by “kaRpagAmbigai nee” of PS.

I left.

Even, in his repeated kritis like nattakurinji, he tried to bring some innovative ideas, which is SS’ special.
As usual, full energy concert. SS never fails in satisfying his die-hard rasikAs. He could have taken some other main rAgam but starting RTP at 8.35 PM, he could not have justified better than this.

I attended this concert. Yes. very good concert. Have not heard Budham Asrayami recently in any live concert with this much well crafted swarams. Samodam Chinthami is rarely heard. One cannot help remembering TRS because it is his staple. Sanjay rendered well. A few rounds of swarams would have further pepped it up. Satre vilagi irum pillai- All the concerts I have attended so far have PK.

Dasarathe- First time I heard this song. Till he announced the rame of the ragam, I was thinking Natakapriya. I should dwell more into these two cousins- to u nderstand them perfectly.

I could't spot out the filmy sangathis pointed out by GRS. Many of them I found superflous some sangathis unmusical. The more unmusical, more the applause. Why should Sanjay resort to these filmy tunes to establish a carnatic ragam. Last year in PSS, for Mayamalavowla RTP, he sang the sketches of Poongathavey taal tgiravay. I think he need not resort to such gimmicks to win the hearts of listners. He had well crossed that stage.

grsastrigal,
Thank you for your always spontaneous reviews.
Wish I had heard that kokilapriya.

CRama and sivaramakrishnan,
I would not have recognized those cinematic prayOgams either. Made me think--how did the audience react when MMI sang the english note for the first time in a concert? My not being a purist makes me wonder, I think :)

Let us take a 4.41 minutes Sindu bairavi journey.. normal SB, TillAna mohanAbmbAl SB, Hindustani SB, National integration SB, gagag gA Sindu bairavi etc., Sometimes, this may be required after a strenuous RTP

Thanks, but like a morsel of food for a hungry man makes him feel ravenously hungry, it has left me aching for the full concert.

Why sir you are saying like this? I am hoping that he will do an RTP with thanga ratham vandadhu before the season is over.

More seriously, what he is establishing is the ragam which spans past the artificial barriers we place in our minds.
