When I entered the venue around 7 PM, Dr. Baby Sreeram was singing Jaya jaya padmanabha. This was the first time I am listening to Dr. Baby Sreeram’s kucheri, for which I was looking forward eagerly. The next item in Vardhani ragam, she said was a special request from the organizers; it was rendered after a brief alapanai for 2 min. After finishing ‘durmargachara’ she started saying about an interview with Dr. Balamurali Krishna garu, where he had advised them to ‘sing mildly and smoothly, by using the mikes minimally; also that that was the secret behind him being able to maintain his voice even at that old age”. I was wondering why she was narrating all these, without realising that Dr. BMK garu had passed away that day evening. Perhaps the condolence speeches were over before the start of the concert. I was not aware until I reached home that night. Thodi alapana was soothing with excellent returns from the young Mallela Tejaswi. Even Dr. Baby was appreciating her younger-accompanists constantly with her smile and cheer, which made the concert lively and enjoyable. She also explained about the ragam charukunthalam before rendering the svaya-rachana on Lord Murugan. Only the sparse audience was painful to see. I can say Rasikas who could not come for such a concert have missed a golden chance!
