I initially went to attend the concert of maharajapuram ramachandran who was slated to perform along with S varadarajan in MFAC. But as i went to MFAC , the concert was cancelled , it looked as though that part of alwarpet did not have the power fully restored . I came back to NGS . i had two choices one to attend KJ Yesudas which already got started in NGS Main and the other was Geetha Raja in NGS Mini.
I have only read about Geetha Raja and have never heard her music before . I do know that she and Aruna sairam are related and they have also learnt from few gurus in bombay and also with vidushi T Brinda.
Geetha Raja had a strong voice , infact the decibel was way too high . Also the layam grip was too weak and at most times I was waiting for good music to come but it hardly came .
She started like Aruna, the throw and the song was a typical aruna sayeeram start shree vighna rajam , this song in gambeera nattai is extremely assertive and her voice could have been less ballistic . The next gowlipantu was just ok. The first alapana was way too short , the reetigowlai was just opened as a quiz master asking the rasikas to guess the raga, the ST krithi renditon was just passable.
The pharas was just ok. With a way too high volume , the kambOdhi I thought will be deafening , I decided to move to another seat and it some what mitigated (possibly the new front loaded speaker of NGS-Mini is the culprit). Alapana was very standard with it usual phrases . The start of krithi was okay, but neraval was not okay as she kept dragging it and taking away from spark of kambOdhi. The swaras were also not that great.
The atana padam was quite good , but the kedaragowlai was a struggle for her to get the so called any rakthi rasa .The usual questioning bhavam of kedaragowlai was not there. I think she sang two ragas in thirruppugazh. She tried to end like Aruna with the revati abhang- but did not go well with me as there was not much grip in sustained aesthetics.
The violinst shraddha played good atleast her kAmbOdhi alapana had better aesthetic shades. With almost not much role in neraval or swaras or raga alapana , the violinist was more like a tambura master.
Mrudangam could have been slightly higher , had the knob turned 30 degree clockwise for mrudangam artist , if after the vocalist had her volume knob turned 45 degrees anticlockwise that would have been better. There was a very minimal role for kanjira artist.The tani was just a plain and standard one.
All said geetha raja music does not have adequate temperment of carnatic idioms , the basic grip of layam was always missing and at times the sangathis were bit like female sirgazhi govindarajan- too raw with not adequate modulation .
Overall a mediocre to good concert for 1 hour and 50 minutes.
