Post by CRama »

Madurai Sivaganesh is an upcoming vidwan who has won the Sangeeta Mudhra title in the Cutcheri Competition 2016 conducted by Mudhra.

Cutcheri Competition.
This is a unique competition conducted by Mudhra to spot right talents that need a platform for exposure. The candidates (age group 18-25 years) are required to furnish a CD of a live concert of theirs. The CDs thus submitted will be heard fully by a team of five panellists and ten entries will be shortlisted. (I was one among the panellists). The shortlisted vidwans will be required to give a full concert in the Mudhra studio which will be heard by a panel of senior judges over webcast and they will determine the winner of the title. The panellists /judges and participants remain unknown to each other. Titles are given for vocalists, Violin accompaniment and Mridangam accompaniment. The winner will be given a main slot in the Season who will sing along with senior accompanists which will definitely boost their performance and confidence level. It do not end with one concert opportunity. They will be given repeat concert opportunities by Mudhra so that they will get the required exposure and performing opportunities in other sabhas. This novel idea was started in 2015. The winners of 2015 Competition were.
Anahita and Apoorva- Vocal
Apoorva Krishna-Violin
N.C.Bharadwaj-Mridangam.
We now see with satisfaction that they have blossomed into artistes of good merit and are getting many concert opportunities.

It will be a dream come true for an upcoming vidwan to sing to the accompaniment of such senior accompanists and it requires a great confidence and presence of mind to deliver a successful concert in the company of such great accompanists. The accompanying vidwans should be greatly appreciated and thanked for agreeing to share the stage with a budding vidwan. The concert commenced at 6.15 P.M with the grand Kanada varnam. Sivagandesh is blessed with a strong and pliable voice which can traverse three octaves with consumable ease, have good breath control and negotiate plain notes, brighas and various gamakams effortlessly. Being groomed in the TNS lineage he has a very strong layam and does kanakku vazhakku in the swaras very intelligently in TNS pattern. He also takes care that aesthetics is not bartered for mathematics. Four ragams- Hamsadhwani, Hameerkalyani, Kharaharapriya and Hamsanandi were elaborated with focus on the jeeva swarams and imaginative sangathis woven around the key swaras. The long akara phrases and expansive alapana style is commendable. Kritis were rendered in the right kalapramanam in the authentic patantharam. The alapanas, neravals and swaras displayed his abundant manodharmam. The three hour slot was utilised very effectively without any minute of sag. The pallavi and the tail enders are from the TNS stable. The audience enjoyed each minute of the concert and expressed their happiness lavishly. At the end of the concert, the accompanying great vidwans also expressed their happiness in sharing the stage with a vidwan of high potential and blessed Sivaganesh for a flourishing career in music.

N.C.Madhav, the violinist from Trichy with lot of experience provided excellent support. His alapanas and swara returns were apt and the violin had nice tone. This is the first time hearing him in person. Thrissur Narendran and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan played with lot of zeal, anticipation and facilitated easy sail for Sivaganesh. The accompanists lifted the concert to a higher level.

Sivaganesh is already singing in many sabhas. Whenever it is in your vicinity, do attend his concert. You will definitely enjoy.

T N Seshagopalan has set a lofty benchmark for Carnatic music.
And most youngsters have been inspired by his genius. A welcome trend.
Thanks CRama for introducing up and coming Vidwans.
