I initially was tossing up whether to attend this concert or the Bharatha Natya dance drama featuring Subramania Bharathiyar's Panchali Sabadham at BGS (choreographed by Jayanthi Subramaniam and set to music by Rajkumar Bharathi). I chose the latter in the end and was super impressed, but again wish I could have attended this too.

After 5 days of break, i had a chance to go to vijay in kalarasana . A fine way to get into season with one of top favourite musician. Kalarasana as a sabha used to have concert in rani seethai hall in gemini . Very recently i went to rani seethai hall, it looks the rani seethai hall is more furnished and the no of seats are reduced in rani seethai hall. I just casually asked the kalarasana sabha patron as to whether he would hold the concert back in rani seethai hall. He said we may hold and as such the no of seats are more here in tapovan hall and that is why he prefers this. That was news to me . Incidentally last year when I went to hear RG Sisters the price of the ticket was minimum 200. for this vijay siva , the ticket price minimum was fixed as 100 . Certainly the chetpet area has less patronage to music , but honestly there is no excess mylapore noise , of course the absence of caterers will have a ripple on the crowd turnout .
Any way the concert was a typical vijay siva concert . Vijay faithfully follows his gurus DKP and DKJ. The feeling of music thru intense diction and spread of languages and its right enunication is indeed there , The opposite feeling of why cannot vijay take the creative elements of raga , neraval and swaras where vijay can go with more drive in those runway was a feeling that I had after the concert.
Vijay started with a rare varnam and the microphone was the third pakkavadyam . The jaganmohini krithi is his school speciality and he presented it very well. The kalyani alapana and swaras were certainly the clean copybook style and the krithi was sung well . The huseni choice was superb in my opinion , there was lovely enunciation of the dikshitar krithi and i liked vijay's presentation . Ragas like huseni , mukhari with a touch of sedateness suits vijay . Vijay kept me in the vortex of classical intensity .
The kapi was well done , possibly i am way too acclimatized with too much of expansion . I have no qualms other than his mini coffee measurement. The second half of swaras were lovely and the well oiled preset taps of JV was well done . The preceding neraval was well done , few drops towards little more laya poruttam was nice but not that intense.
The RTP was in ragam natabhairavi . THe contours of natabhairavi were more perfect with vidushi charumathi bow. Felt vijay bit circled in early stages in the land of jonpuri and abheri . The taanam was non metered and well done . Has vijay ever sung taanam with mrudangam , I am assuming he has not done at all . The neraval line was cute with natabhairavi raga mudra . The swaras were not thrown open with any steady stream of manodharma sangeetham but sung with preset patterns . I liked both his ananda bhairavi and bhairavi , he sang in both speeds , I would have preferred bit more pallavi expansion.
The Bhairavai tukkada was nice and the bharathiyar pagaivanukku aRulvai was sung with a real great feel . THe pahadi RKSK tuned abhang is not way too noisy like other abhang singers , his cymbals were out but thankgod it was not used that much. The viruththam was the best for me . I think he started with a significant mohanam overlap but the raga in my opinion was only bilahari . The choice of hindolam and navarasa kannada was lovely and the am i toy krithi was lovely . For a change i liked the end of nanoru vilayattu bommaiyaa , this krithi usually finds a place post main before rtp or immediately as a tukkada . I liked him taking the krithi with a nice abhirami anthadi prelude. It was exact 2 hours and 30 minutes and he ended the concert with mangalam combo.
Charumathi raghuraman continues to be the finest asset for CM in the act of accompaniment . Her raga bhavam was so concise , there were moments where vijay had a share of ambiguity and only with charu bow and touches I was able to gauge the lakshana bhava (For eg huseni was so crystal clear when vijay started it was difficult to disambiguate with mukhari. The early alapana of natabhairavi was not crystal clear to me when vijay started it had share of jonpuri or abheri typecast). Also the viruththam start had a mohanamish bilahari doze only charu guided towards disambiguity. Also her complete pass of not interfering during vocal rendition needs special mention- charu shows her TNK bow and azhuttam at most places.
J Vaidyanathan played beautifully , he has mastered aggression without any loud thumping. His tani was also great. I particularly liked chandrasekara sharma part in tani- possibly his volume during rendition of songs especially in first half was bit low.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
