Greetings respected friends

I did post this in the above Kutcheri/recordings link ... but then thought it would be just as appropriate here...sorry for taking the extra space!!

I recently recorded an album of Thevaram & have retuned some in commonly popular Carnatic ragas.
The entire cd is not as Carnatic as i would have prefered but rather of a more of a listenable nature to the uninitiated.
I am happy I went this route since people here, who would previously switch off at the mere mention of the word Carnatic....now are warming up to the sounds of Sahana & Kapi etc.

Thought I'd share one with you ... hope you enjoy it ... Let me know!

Deat MBK Sir:

Just had a chance to listen to the clip. What a wonderful sruti-aligned smooth pliable voice and I thought the use of sangatIs were judicious so to convey the essence of the hymn. Who is the composer?

I came across the following verse from kAraikkAl ammaiyAr purANam -

iRavAda inba anbu vENDippin vENDukinRAr
piRavAmai vENDum mINDum piRappuNDEl unnai enRum
maRavAmai vENDum innum vENDum nAn magizhndu pADi
aRavA nI ADumbOdun aDiyinkIzh irukka enRAr.

Having sought eternal delightful love (from Lord Siva), she further entreats;
I seek not to be born again; should I be born again, ever
I seek not to forget You; further I seek joyfully to sing
O Great Ascetic! at that time when You dance, I be under Your feet - said she;

Hi all,
I'm a violinist and new to this forum, though I've been going thru this without signing in. I accompany many front running and 2nd rung vocalists. I've special interest in Thevaram also. Full thevaram can be had from shaivam.org - in Tamil font, eng. unicode and pdf also. Full Thirupugazh can be found in kaumaram.com. The viruthams they sing is very interesting. The thing is, the Othuvars don't just sing any "akAra ragaAs". They sing thevaram hymns without thAla, we call it virutham, but they call it "sudhdhAngam".

Generally thevaram is not looked thru the prism of Carnatic music raga presentation. they give more importance to the words, which they sing without referring to any paper or books. Only of late, many OthuvArs are using different Carnatic rAgAs, else they use only those defined in thevaram as "paN"s, which number only to 26 rAgAs.

MBK, is it your own recording that you are sharing or is it a commercial one? If the copyright to it is not yours please do not share.
