The curiosity to hear Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar for the first time took me to this concert.THE concert had a 10 to 15 mins late start (7pm being advertised time) . Mala could have given her custom mikes and custom gadgets much before but she gave it only after a period of time where the technicians adjusted with their sabha microphones- post another evening-1 concert.

Concerts can always have sound setting problems , our music is great even without the best of setting . The sound setting error can be at times an absolute error in the sense when overall volume is jacked up bit more than the adequate .That is attimes okay . But if relative error sets in where the accompanist volume is slightly higher than the main performing artist , then it becomes a little inconveniance to start with but as concert moves it becomes a bit of why the hell is this inconveniance continuing. This inconveniance is more pronounced when it is a flute concert.

THe MLV look alike with a flute in hand started with MS amma's patented Om namah pranavakAya , the signature slokham from MS amma . Nice start and I liked her little restrained demeanour when she spoke. She thanked the organizers and wished happy new year and announced the composer of shree raga varnam as garbapurivasar . THe cluster of madhyamavati -shree ragam is the flute artists bastion and I loved the start of shreeragam varnam . The lovely vAthApi came next with a brief alapana , her blow was bit measured where i noticed a share of more fingering . Many times i Struggle to disambiguate when neraval ends and when swaras start for instrument concert . At times I wonder for most of the instrument concerts like flute , violin and veena , I keep wondering do they even play neraval or is it a small sketch springboard to launch into kalapanaswaras. Hats off to mala who came up with a well rounded pranavasya roopa vakra thundam , where else you can visualize pranava shakthi then a flute. The kalyanavasantham alapana was not that meditative there was more share of fingering to not give that emote of kalyanavasantham. She played the krithi very well and it was a neat presentation.

Some time there or just before , Kallidakurichi sivakumar asked for a slight volume jack up and at the same time the main flautist also asked for little more, The first got approved and the second was not heard - i felt mala did not sell her dil maange more of the relative volume. The mrudangam volume was obliged and I found in mAlavi aggressive krithi, the concert was kallidakurichi sivakumar in mrudangam accompanied by Mala in flute. Malavi bit went out too quickly (I hope that is not simhavahini the another nenarunchi).

Her next foray into todi was lovely. Todi as a main to my limited knowledge is not taken that much by flautist when compared to say shankarabharanam or a madhyamavati main. I assumed when she played todi alapana and continued with that awesome taayE yashodA , i thought it was main . Her vidwat was exceptionally demonstrated with todi alapana ,more and more of fingering to produce todi gamakam - the queen of ragas was presented by the only vaadhya of Lord Krishna. THe swaras in todi were concise and that was understable as the next was only main.THe taaye Yashoda was no arbAtam like a madurai somu or any dream run like madurai mani iyer , but i felt she played in an extremely disciplined way to focus only on krithi stress points to present in a gayaki like fashion .

THe kAmbOdhi alapana was played well , she made some attempts to give few longer jaarus but it did not reach me . with the krithi start with O O O O it was nice with only u u u blow in the flute , SHe could not bring me the srirangam perhaps it needs more time for opening of the curtains to see rangasAyi. Swaras were well done in KAmbOdhi her blow was uniform and she presented wonderfully.

The violinist srinivasa rao did just well to chug along . His touchpoints were not very sharp to produce more aesthetic experience. Usually kallidakurichi sivakumar does not bang , but it is just his volume that was not callibrated well for the flute concert as it was bit higher . He played very well during the first half . H prasanna callibrated well with a little reduced tap to aid the flute concert.

The last few times that i visited chromepet for a concert, the venue was closer to station but this was bit far .It was late too for me to head home

Flute can have a lot of fingering and laya kanakku like a Flute Mali, but what about the longer serene blow like KS gopalakrishnan. Mala chandrasekhar bit fell short in the serene blow. May be she had that bansuri with her post main , i was not there to possibly taste those touchpoints.

All said Mala has extremely high romba sampradaya grounding . Sivaramakrishnan the local chormepet rasika must have been ah ah oh oh with the back to back Todi and KAmbOdhi ,I assume he was not there. The venue does not have the best of sound system (who cares that much), the crowd was pretty good for a flute concert. Are there any rasikas from 600044 to complete the song list post main in our forum??.

Overall a very good concert for the 1 hour 45 minutes that i attended.
