Not much to write about, the voice of both sisters were not in a good shape and anything above tara sthayi Sa was a struggle for both the artistes. Barring the voice issues, some of the alapanas and swaras were good. But the overall concert experience was not that great for me, and I feel sad when the artistes struggle like this.

Right, but the Sriranjani swaras made up for everything, including braving Bangalore traffic.

Thanks a lot for calling a spade a spade! Of course the sisters have been struggling with their voices for such a long time now. Even their MMU concert on Vijay tv was quite an embarrassment from a voice standpoint to be honest.

I do agree and empathize with them for fighting it out with this serious handicap, particularly Shanmukhapriya. To me, one of the greatest losses for carnatic music in recent times has been the loss of Shanmukhapriya's voice. Considering the vivacity and sprightliness in their singing when they burst into the scene in the late eighties/early nineties, they should have ruled the scene today. Notwithstanding this handicap, their limitless repertoire, the freshness they bring to each Kriti, their aesthetics, and brilliant interpretation of rare ragas, are reasons why I love their singing. If only Shanmukhapriya's voice improves (and I yearn for that miracle to happen), they would start sharing the stage on a more equal footing than currently. I am waiting ...

To provide an example: If you go to sangeethapriya, do a search on VIjayanagari (a rare ragam) and listen to the very few alapanas that are available, the one in this concert -

clearly stands out for its brilliance (in spite of aaaaaaaaaall the problems with the voice).

Couple of minutes ago, I was doing the same
Listen to the concerts in 1997 and the other concert. Finest of voices. Hamsadwani for around 30 minutes. I sincerely pray to Ambal that her voice should be restored.

Another case in point:

Listen to the alapana. I haven't heard Amrithavarshini more soul-stirring than this - sophisticated use of anuswarams to bring out the raga bhavam to the fullest.
