naadabrahmam , if i recall correctly did publish few musical journals. I am not sure if it is the same organization that has rented the carnatic omnipresent hall of ragasudha till October 09th to conduct this festival . May be some one can clarify on the organization naadabrahmam?

Dr K Vageesh is some one I knew very little . One of his relative vasudha kesav is the first musician whom i got acclimitized . She sings really well and I also saw her in the hall for the first half of the concert. Vageesh has spent considerable time in Mysore , Delhi and also Trichy with his musical assignments getting toed along with his career in AIR . Mysore, Delhi and Trichy are three diverse pockets of minimal to zero patronage of CM. In the last one year or so I did hear one song of his which was presented by a contemporary vidushi /vidwan whom i immensely like , and after hearing that i thought let me give a try with Dr Vageesh. This is my first concert of his, i was not acclimitized either with his recordings or any youtube clippings

As he ended with brahmamE thunai with an additional extra phrase of naada brahmamE thunai in madhyamavati , i was not sure if the last was indeed his own composition , I atleast came out with the impression like vageesh == (sethalapathi + Arunachala kavirayar )/2

He started with a slokham and i just entered towards the end . With the first krithi I could hear few pointers towards jaganmohini , gambeera nattai and also nattai .MAS in few sangathis played nattai pancharatna jagadHa , but if he did not play that I would have put his first number gana natha as gambeera nattai ?? .Incidentally i was thinking the first was a krithi and not a varnam ,but shri vageesh said it was varnam . I wish he also announced the raga to clear my ambiguity. They say shree vathapi in sahana of papanasam sivan is a krithi and not a varnam , innam en manam in charukesi is a lalgudi varnam and not a krithi .One can easily mistake the varnam/krithi foggy boundary .His vocal discipline was demonstrated beautifully with a round of swaras in the first varnam in nattai??? , nattai is super delicacy when you add swaras.

The second he started with a brief alapana , my head tossed between sriranjani and abhogi. I was glad not only me -even vageesh and MAS were in the same boat as the raga was jayamanohari. T's krithi in jayamanohari was a touch and go , in my life i have never heard any one elaborating jayamanohari like its other 2 close siblings. The next gaanaamudhapaanam was difficult as his rendition was not easily mapping in my head , voice manoevarability was missing and koteeswara iyer krithi did not have koti(crore) aesthetics but had only laksham(lakhs) aesthetics

Vageesh got into the grove with his dhanyasi and he sang very well , the approach of vageyakkara'esque singing vidwan came from there on. The popular annamacharya krithi is usually sung in hindolam(courtesy ms amma), but he sang in dhanyasi . THe best was indeed mohanam and It was a lovely mohanam composition of vageesh with words anchored on saint ramanuja . Ramanuja is so important in all our lives but for without ramanuja and adishankara I would have been Rajesh Ranatunga. In his own mohanam krithi vageesh picturesly describes the contributions of ramanuja and also the great temple town of srirangam. He brought in phrases like vashista advaitam , om namo narayana and yet did not lose mohanam musical charm due to his excessive words . What can i say vageesh mohanam was almost in the zone of yen palli kondeerayya of Arunachala kavirayar. Thamizh krithis as a rule of thumb has more density of words and vageesh gave a uttama vageyakkara feel in his mohanam krithi and balanced words with right musical muse which is not at all easy in thamizh.

Ragasudha hall in the month of Sept to Nov is usually used by vidwans and vidushis to remind all listeners that I am also surviving and please come and listen to me in december where in that month i may sing RTP if you come to only these few sabhas . Vageesh surprised me by singing a RTP in ragasudha hall , the start was advertised as 06:45 pm (not 6 to 6 15) , he still sang a well grounded single raga rtp in the major ghana raga shankarabharanam . Prior to pallavi ,HIs lyrical orientation in both musical phrases and face was om namo narayana but he announced today was shivan paradosham and took a dive from ramanuja to adishankara. Nice lines in pallavi(shankaram parameshwaram kapaleeshwaram , bhajE sadA paramashiva) . Pallavi neraval had trikaalam. i missed bit more verve in pockets of alapana and neraval, the swaras was pretty good . The krithi preceding RTP was the classic hamsanandi of papanasam sivan , he began with dheena saranyan and then went to sreenivasa, despite that anupallavi extra starting thrust effort , to my ears he did not give me enough of hamsanandi raga devata.

Another beauty came with his anjanA nandanam veeram , lovely krithi I could not make up my mind if the krithi was suddha dhanyasi or abheri for some time .I went and asked him towards the end he said the raga was udayaravichandrika and he included raga mudra in the krithi .I failed to spot that phrase but it was a lovely krithi and the musical muse was superb. He ended with a brief madhyamavati lines in brahmamE thunai and then naada brahmamE thunai was there. I was not sure if naadabrahmamE had any reference to sadguru Thyagaraja or was it just lines to workship music(naadam) .

MAS played well for few songs especially his parur cut bowing glides in mohanam was well done . During songs he kept minimal bowing which is not a regular feature of his play. B ganapathyraman takes a lot of time to create patterns ,i would never call him as a fast mrudangist , he perhaps felt vageesh was like his appa where few extra key words here and there gives more juicy full toss that helped him to ideate . Ganapathy's father sethalapathi balasubramaniam(known for emote filled bhava) was a wonderful singer . Ravichandran ghatam had just enough touchpoints to enjoy but not make any judgements .

It is okay for me to assume that Vageesh musical days were the best in delhi, mysore or trichy , but there is still lot of originality and classicism that is still complete. The vaggeyakkkara arunachala kavirayar within him is coming in plenty , few pointers of liberally adding few words like sethalapathi also makes the concert great . There was no ahA ohO feeling in terms of manodharma.

Dr K Vageesh was unpretentious and has no AIR despite retiring from AIR.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 15 mins

kVageesh is a great choice for attending if we like to be stunned by the unexpected.
The most charming among blind dates .
I once sat transfixed at his elaborate version of shudha dhanyasi- narayana ninna namada...
There are artists who make me sure I could never have been a singer , even if I had tried
Then there are Artists like Vageesh who prove otherwise.Make it look within reach :)
A simple, nonsensical, mind-over-matter artist , who never fails to touch you .

Mns,
Thank you . In today's The HIndu Friday Review , there is a photograph of Dr Vageesh receiving award with 2 other artists. Their founder is Subramanian (special thanks to him for organizing). I did see another lovely reviewer from The Hindu seated , may be we will have this concert reviewed and published in The Hindu during subsequent weeks. Dr Vageesh needs surely writeup as many still would not even know him.

Dr K Vageesh and I were at school together in Mysore.
He has worked very hard at music. He was also thr Dy Dir General AIR in charge of auditions.
He conducts Thyagaraja aradhana at home every year. He sings brilliantly during that celebration. Many musicians come and join in. He also did Unchavritti one year on that day.
A worthy inheritor of tradition, indeed!

VIdwan Vageesh sang Ganamrudham by Koteeswara Iyer in salagam (37th Melakartha). My mistake , apologies corrected courtesy to the lovely - The HIndu Reviewer G Swaminathan.

G Swaminathan is one of my favorite reviewer writing for The Hindu - I do know the review is on the way as I saw him. The krithi that he sang Anjana nandanam was not suddhadhanyasi but udayaravichandrika (One mistake by both). Here is the review that came on Oct 13th for this concert
