Sanjay Subrahmanyan - Krishna Gana Sabha, 25/12/17

Sanjay+Varadarajan+Neyveli Venkatesh have always been a winning formula and the Christmas concert was no surprise. Just add B. Rajasekar (Morsing) to elevate the overall experience @ Krishna Gana Sabha. The hall was packed to the brim (and I missed the varnam due to traffic).

Varalakshmi Bhajera Manasa in Sourastram was majestic, followed by a couple of short pieces - Thyagarajah’s Ananda Sagara in Garudadhwani and Gopalakrishna Bharati’s Anandha Koothadinan.

Sudha Saveri was the main piece… When Sanjay started “Dharini Telisi”, quite a few mama/mamis in the audience started humming along with him. Thankfully, they couldn’t keep pace with Sanjay’s improvisations . Varadharajan continued to mark his stamp of excellence - his shadow play and crisp responses made the performance very memorable. I’ve always felt Varadharajan hasn’t gotten his due recognition, but his stature imo is on a meteoric rise. Thani (NV+Rajasekar) was very refreshing. NV showed his mastery in kumkis & Rajasekar kept pace with NV all through.

A short piece in Kanakangi (Ullam Urigi Uirigi) was followed by a melodious Harikambodhi RTP. RTP was probably cut short due to time, but then, 2.5 hours passed in a jiffy.

In all, no news here - yet another brilliant performance by Sanjay & his core team.

The minimalist rAga garuDa (dhvani) assumed an enormous wing span and surprised us
That Hari kAmbOdi RTP was a work of art.
I vote for the khanjira always for an upa pakkavAdyam (along with ghatam). The mOrsing as a rule is boring to me. This time in the hands of Rajashekar, it had good embellishments without much gimmickry.

You are correct, alapana for Garudadhwani was elaborate (And, for those of us who had a twinkle in the eye, Sanjay announced the raga at the end ).

Re. Harikambodi RTP, I do have to commend SV - seemed like he could literally predict Sanjay's Thaanam moves! Very enjoyable.

Suddhsaveri being the main and related to the clan,
Harikamboji for RTP perhaps offered lesser contrast (compared to say, Shanmukhapriya or Ramapriya).
