Re: Naushad: The musical journey of a musical man
Chellappa,
You made my day! What a journey it was to the golden era! M.A.Siddiqui needs to be thanked for making it happen. His sensitivity and knowledge of Naushad's music brings back the wonder- struck moments which many of his songs inspired in our childhood and youth. They still hold magic for many of us. It was grand to hear them again--as if we were on a guided tour of the rich cache. Not only did I not connect more songs to their rAgAs, I relished the way they came aboutwith the master's magic touch. The singers and lyricists added more magic dust to Naushad's music--the actors too, let me add

Naushad's classic song from Shabab movie - Jo Main Jaanti Bichrath hai saiyyan - this is in raga Mand and pure classical and extremely melodious composition. He gave Lata a short virutham type thing as well before starting the song which is equally beautiful.

"The cumulative impact of the raga is supposed to be darkness and secrecy. It is considered to possess supernatural powers and is supposed to conjure spirits. " - what a different perspective on ragam Hindolam - for us it is a meditative and moving raga.

On the other hand, take a rAgA like mukhAri--some consider it an azhugai (sad) rAgA whereas for some of us it is soul-stirring and has a great emotional impact!

'Arivaar Yaar Unnai Arivaar' also applies to the raga Mukhari itself because it is so hard to pin-point an exact emotion in it - it is not all sweet like Mohanam or Hamsadhwani nor all sorrow like SPVarali - it is a bittersweet ragam and a solid, long Mukhari alapana can cast a spell.

This should have been posted in Light classical section. Not here.
Secondly, I would suggest, that OP gives a very brief description of what the link is about in addition to giving the link. A few lines may not hurt.
In the Light classical section, there is already a thread ( 4th item) 'hindi film songs based on classical ragas' .

Perhaps. Still, there may be others who think that the RAGAS thread is where it should go. If the Admin/Moderators happen to see this thread, they will move it if they think this thread belongs elsewhere...

Even under Ragams section, this wont fit in. Once we start allowing film songs, whether based on classical ragas or not, that too with youtube videos, there is no end to it. The section will be flooded with supposedly classical melodies from tamil, and other regional language film songs. Even for well known carnatic music creations, as ragamalika , we have difficulty in identifying the ragams . Actually, it will be still nicer to have such things in the Lounge. ( not even in light classical section). As a comment on the article on Naushad, I have a different preference. Here in my site, I am presenting the Best melodies of Lata Mangeshkar, mostly without any video. ( except when I had problem in getting the mp3 files). The best song creations by C.Ramachandra, MadanMohan, SD Burman and Pandi Ravisankar. ( The mod is requested to move the thread to lounge....if needed)
