ajanamarEndranum
I have heard this as 'ajanum and mahEndiranum'
nIyE en vAzhvu en jIvAdhAram
I have heard this as 'nIyE vAzhvil yen jIvAdhAram'

Lji, which is the correct version?

paniyum -------> paNiyum
caranA ----------> caraNA
sharanam -------> sharaNam
arulvAy ----------> aruLvAy

ravi,

I almost replied saying it would be paNiyum, caraNa etc. - although I was quite perplexed as to why you would have had such doubts :)

Ravi,
Wouldn't ajan, amarEndranum (ajan+amarEndan+um, or, ajan+amarar+indran+um?) also be apt? God, indrA et al?

But, 'aja' generally means 'brahmA'

Yes, Govindan. However, the meaning that best suits the context is ajan as kaDAvuLin Agu peyar (an epithet of God)?
All the god's names are there in your english dictionary too, besides 'existing from all eternity'.

kalpa - A day of brahmA or 1000 yugAs – 4,320,000 mortal years
- this is the duration of the World.
- 30 such days of brahmA is one month and 12 months a year
- 100 such years is the lifetime of brahmA
- 50 such years have elapsed and we are in 51st year of brahmA
- known as zvEta varAha kalpa
- At the end of 100 years of brahmA the world is annihilated
manvantara – Age of a Manu – consisting of 71 mahA yuga –
- equal to 12,000 years of Gods
- equal to 4,320,000 years of humans
- equal to 1/14th of a day of brahmA
- 6 such manvantaras have elapsed
- 7th presided over by vaivazvata manu is going on
- 7 more manvantaras are yet to come
mahAyuga – consists of 4 yugAs of mortals –
- kRta, trEtA, dvApara and kali - 4,320,000 years of mortals.
- A day and night of brahmA consists of 2,000 such mahA yugAs.
- kali yuga – begun on 3,102 B.C
NB : There seems to be some contradiction in the figures.

Taking the above into account, even 'brahmA' cannot be truly called 'aja'. As far 'indra' is concered, in my understanding, this is a designation and does not refer to an individual. Accordingly, if 'brahmA' is not 'aja', so also the others of trinity. The only 'aja' therefore is viShNu (not of Trinity).

Sri tyAgarAja uses 'aja' to mean 'brahmA'. That's what I have seen elsewhere also.
Therefore, 'aja' may not be an epithet.
BTW, IMHO, kAma also qualifies to be called 'aja' - one of the names of 'kAma' is 'ananyaja' - 'uniquely born'.

ks,
karuNa sadana means 'abode of mercy'.

To me, aja has always refered to brahmA - remember Purandara dasa's 'koDu bEga divya matI' - he refers to saraswati as 'brahmanna rANi' as well as 'ajana paTTada rANI'....
