The yearly Krishna Jayanthi concert of Vanimahal had this concert on Gokulashtami concert . There was only thing that was sad about this concert ,the organizers boxed it as exact 2 hours. The constraint of singing on Lord Krishna krithis is bit tough but certainly the joy of hearing how suryaprakash and team overcame it was just wonderful.What a start it was with both Melakaveri Balaji and Trichy Murali joining with samaja vara gamanA . Suryaprakash is finding far more patterns in HindOlam with such rAga bhavam and rhtythmmic tightness ma ga sa ,ni ni sa ,ni sa ga sa with yadhava kula murali anchor .Also the early anchor slokham of krishnAya govindAya in HindOlam was splendid. He is a terrific hindolam singer.

Darbar heaviness with raga was nice and shree venugopala had a good spread . Swaras were bit measured highlighted that extra thrust to disambiguate with nayaki was well done.There are many dishes in the hotel ending with 65, you have gobi 65 , panneer 65 and few more 65's also. As a human do you like all 65 dishes the same , no way. In Carnatic Music there is also a melakartha 65 . It depends on what krithi you take , the joy of vasudevayani or kamalAmbam or abhayambikA or needu charana is high for rajesh. This kathaya kathaya mAdhavam hE rAdhE is just not there in that league yet. Suryaprakash takes a bit of DKJ too , I am assuming all musicians when they sing this Narayana theerthar kriti take a bit of DKJ. Kalyani was quite well done . I lost a bit of my attention as it is not my favoured melakartha 65 as it was measured.

What a lovely vilambit and fast filler , ha ha the aadum varai aadattum with the sketch of huseni raga was superb,let musicians sing more and more detailed huseni .His fast filler parama purusha in vasantha is one of a kind , special thanks to both TrichyMurali and Balaji and more importantly suryaprakash going as one cadooble with swaras like TRS or MMI. Fast fillers if fragmented with violin return becomes uninspiring for me .What a pattern with vasantha paramapurusha .

Todi as main was well done,sree krishnam bhaja manasa was expected and that only came. I did not get neraval there , Todi without neraval in shree krishnam was a bit of disappointment . Todi krithi was delivered with right aksharam and his enunciation was clean.In the tukkadas gnb mega hit in mishra yaman - radha sametha krishna was a percussion full toss. But i liked the last devaki than kulakuzhandhai the most . I think this was popularized by mahavidushi MLV . The joy of hearing mesemerizing anandabhairavi ,seguing with lift of vaasntha and the last with neelambari with thAlelO was very aesthetic , there was more of a mahavidwan santhanam within there .The concert ended with that thAleLo in neelAmbari, bit surprised as why mangalam was not sung.

The violin artist V V Ravi came to best of form only in todi , his sangathis in todi alapana bit reminded of mahavidwan KVN sangathis violin return, all pracheena piDi . His early half was bit on the board. Kudos to both percussionists they bought sustained excellence . Melakaveri Balaji gives continuous power without overbang , I am glad he has reduced bit of pauses since last time I heard him, has it got to do with recent rains which filled the melakaveri village near kumbakonam. Trichy Murali was a yAdhava kula murali joy from the start, for the amount he was paid by Vanimahal he worked overtime .Srirangam and trichy is brimming with water and he lived with that times. There was superb rhythm in particular when you have longer cycles of neraval and swaras upapakkavadyam shine more and Suryaprakash did a fantastic job

Few Suggestions to Vanimahal

This was a prime evening concert , For about 20 mins the screen was not opened and artist were ready prior to 06:45 start. Vanimahal exactly opens the screen at the advertised time like a drama troupe and a lovely 2 mins introduction happens. You can do that before also if the artist are ready . Also for sure can go upto 9PM please. I lost changu chakra katha neraval in todi and also an RTP . 4 or 5 years back when he had 2 and half hours this musician sang with HN Bhaskar a lovely dwijAvanthi pallavi which is there in youtube , with 2 hours RTP is not possible that too he taking sree krishnam MD krithi . Please give more time that too when it is open ended slot. You are doing a great job. Special kudos to the organiser J krishnamachary and other gentleman who introduced , just make it from 120 to 150 mins please.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours

I just googled to now to find the above number was also sung by MLV. There is a lovely recording of MLV amma singing this number. I thought the tune smith of this song was by TNS and corrected the above post . I just checked Lakshman Ji mail where he sent me the list of tunesmiths of Ambujam krishna songs . The above song tunesmith was KR Kedaranathan penned by Ambujam Krishna, incidentally this song was tuned in 1957 as per the scanned image he sent me few months back . Lovely ragamaliga number and beautifully sung by suryaprakash.

Glad to hear that Suryaprakash sang one of my favorite rAgamAlikAs of AK. Kedaranathan has tuned the visually rich lyrics of hers beautifully. His tuning of some other songs are noteworthy too. He taught this one to Rukmini Sunderarajan and I learnt it from her pronto. Suryaprakash would have relished singing it and would have brought out the song's beauty. He also sang other favored ongs of mine. Sri vEnugopala dEvA nI vA was an early recording by VVSadagopan ( he learnt it from the composer).
