I was surprised to see this youngster named M.R.Subramaniam sing amidst seasoned vidwans namely S.Varadarajan & B.Ganapathyraman. I was a bit late for the concert due to the incessant rain. When i entered the hall, the varali neraval immedietly reminded me of Vidwan K.V.Narayanaswamy.This being the first few minutes of music that i heard from this young boy i couldn't help feeling that he must have had substantial training from the great maestro.

But then the Shanmukhapriya alapana revealed much more about this youngster's musical thinking. S.Varadarajan responded mellifluously to the extent that after quite some years i could experience a raga resonating in an auditorium.

Then came the bigger treat - Keeravani.
Begining on expected lines and then slowly started delving deep into the raga, one couldn't help wondering that the potential of this young musician, if moulded , could rock the music world.

B.Ganapathyraman as we all know in his usual flamboyant swashbuckling style presented a graceful thani with an extravagant tisram.

"Ranagapuravihara" and "irakkam varamal" were again just instances to illustrate what I have written above.

As mentioned earlier when I entered the auditorium, he was singing Aazhi mazhai kannaa in varali. After that the list is as follows:

annapoorne-sama
andavane-shanmukapriya
manavyalakinchara-nalinakanti
punniyam oru koti-keeravani
rangapuravihara-brindavana saranga (wonder why it isn't madhyamavati)
irakkam varaamal ponadhenna kaaranam-behag
paras tillana
mangalam

Thanks for the list...
Though Brindavana saragna and Madyamavathi share the same aro-ava, M uses lot of gamagams (characteristic of cm) whereas Bsaranga is devoid of gamagams and has flat notes most of the time...something like suddhasaveri and durga.

If I'm not wrong, I believe it is Shri. Palghat K.V. Narayanaswamy (KVN). I think I had heard this boy once, singing behind KVN...

Shri KVN, for a long long time did not have any sishya whom you could see perform on the stage atleast, except his wife and daughter, and as an ardent rasika of him and his as well as Ariyakudi baani, I used to wonder, what would happen to his legacy...

Luckily, I think we are left with atleast one to continue his great legacy.

IIRC, he is a student of both the Narayanaswamis - learnt from KVN and learning from PSN.

If I am not mistaken, Shri Abhishek Raghuram is one of Shri KVN's disciples too.

I'm 100% sure about the fact that Abhishek is not a KVN disciple, he is PSN's. Unless ofcourse Abhi has learnt like Ekalavya from KVN!

And there is another SishyA of KVN--Hemmige Srivatsan who often played the violin for him and continues as a violinist, vocalist and teacher...

arasi and others if you haven't seen HVS, here he is http://www.narada.org/hvs/index.html . He himself is a fine singer. Have heard in proximity from my childhood. He should be in his late 30s now.

Thanks ksrimech for Srivatsan's picture with his guru. He grew up in New York State before his family moved to California. He came back on a visit to our coast as a teenager, and gave a great violin concert! We were all very proud of him. Though I was in California recently, I did not have an oppurtunity to meet him. I met his student though!
He accompanied KVN in Chennai at the last concert I attended of KVN, a few years before the master passed away. I hear Srivatsan is concentrating more on vocal performances now...

There is another excellent disciple of KVN by name Pattabhi Rama Pandit I have a couple of concerts of his if he allows me to post them I will do so.

I have been a KVN fan for long and after hearing Pattabhi I was happy that his bani still lives on.

I have heard Srivatsan both as a vocalist and as a violinist he is outstanding. Recentlly I attended two concerts in the bay area with Pattabhi singing and Srivatsan playing the violin and they matched each other perfectly.

I heard that Pattabhi is someone you have to listen to. I missed his concert with Srivatsan in the bay area by a week or so--he sang after my visit to that part of the country. Hope he would allow someone to post a sampling of his music on the forum. Srivatsan too, for that matter...

I sincerely hope the very few disciples of KVN like MR, HVS and now Pattabhi (I'm hearing about him now only through this thread, so thanks) would keep up the tradition, style and baani of the great vidwan, and would make their own names as well in CM world.

It would be a pity to see KVN's legacy fade away, and we would want these young vidwans to uphold it, though I've not heard any of them so far.

M.R.Subramanian is the grandson of the late Ayyalore Krishnan. He has been giving excellent concerts for more than two years.

MRS, Pattabhi and one more Balaji all learned under KVN when I learned under him. Its shame for me that I lost touch with them. Good to see they perform admirably following KVN's path. Best wishes to them!

Papansam Ashok Ramani also used to come to KVN to learn.
