Personally in the last 6 months I hardly had the luxury to attend weekday concert that too in central madras as the commute from work makes it impossible . The joy of attending mark and steve waugh brothers was always a great pull to hear and I just made it to this concert . Rain was heavy but possibly that was also the reason to get a seat for this free concert
This is the first concert for me in this season 2018. I with my own acclimitization and calculated guess knew that this concert is 2 hours but i got a 15 mins bonus, i wish they make it to 2 hours and 30 mins atleast in future . This sabha BVB conducts it early and most importantly during this time there is no cannibalisation of other sabhas conducting concerts , but ofcourse the NRI's have not arrived yet.
Abhishek got into the stage after the previous concert where Dr Sundar was singing , sundar wrapped with lathangi main and a DKJ special karunai deivame karpagamE . Abhishek started with a brief alapana just before gajananayutham , the first two numbers Abhishek and anantha had microphone adjustment problems . I thought the microphone was even great before they started asking more or less -i wish they become less pedantic on this microphone issue in the future.
The veghavahini or chakravakham had a sudden surge of abhishek manodharma where he raced with his cousin brother in that line kunjara ...with a flash of swaras .Impact was just there but not strong enough.He moved on to the second song and it was just the krithi , a rare poornachandrika krithi, the telisiramaish sangathis came bit here and there , the impact was just not there . Blame it on his paramaguru's model guru ariyakudi who usually gives this standalone krithi as #2. Personally like to have a bit more longer krithi like say evarani in devamruthavarshini as #2 but this shree rajarajeshwari bit disappointed shri rajesh
what can one say from there on . Abhishek got into the groove .Personally few decades back when i heard this natakapriya from I think vidwan TVS for the first time i have struggled to disambiguate the natakapriya from todi . But Abhishek was crystal clear with natakapriya from the first second , the alapana had very interesting deep classical pidi . The krithi mara jananim ashraye by NCH krishnamacharyulu is deep in musical aesthetics , there is also towards the end a kind of gopuchha yathi- MD step ladder like sangathis , both mark and steve waugh raced beautifully in the swaras, it was a lovely natakapriya submain

What a joy to hear my favourite raga cluster, I adore this cluster of brindavana saranga -shree and in general melakartha 22 and its children. Shree ragam as an alapana is very very rare . Abhishek beautifully sang the alapana it had his stamp all over with his brilliant voice .Shree ragam did not get a grease paint but it was musical aesthetics at its best . With my conditioning i was thinking may be it is nama kusumamula or a quick shree varalakshmi but i did not expect the premium krithi of sadguru thyagaraja - endarO mahanubhavulu to popup there as main.
HOw many great musicians in the past have taken this krithi endaro mahanubhavulu, the joy of listening racy semmangudi and nidhanam MDR are the two camps of best in breed endaro Mahanubhavulu. The joy of me once hearing Dr Srivalsan menon and maharajapuram ramachandran once where did a deep sangathi mahAnu bhAvulu with his baritoned voice is just still in my head . This krithi endaro Mahanubhavulu and abhishek treatment few hours before is going to make me sleepless tonight . What a joy to hear his modulation and also the pace of sangathis he built edifice after edifice and at the end it was musical aesthetics at its best. The joy of his deep masculine voice in sangathis like chanduru varnunni and then the speed sangathis like paramabhagava and the end like MDR typecaset rAma bhakthulu and then a stress of sita rama bhakthulu made endaro Wow Bhavulu very special . THe swara patterns that sadguru placed between sangathis , they are not cheap kalpitha but the musician can make it as grand kalpana . Abhishek was brilliant with his imagination and musical delivery
Post endaro , the kamas was taken with a detailed alapana and he took the popular MD krithi from the anupallavi line santhana sowbhagya was well done and he looped back to santhana gopalakrishnam . THe last thillana with a brief darbAri was brilliant , I do know that there are two tillanas in darbari one by S kalyanaraman and another by Lalgudi jayaraman. Abhishek maternal grand uncle Lalgudi jayaraman came with his cute poruttams and abhishek sang beautifully the lord muruga based thilllana in the ever beautiful darbari kAnadA.
What a joy to hear anantha

Anantha is even more watchful than this cousin Abhishek . His consistency to give tonal quality, the left right balance .He was playing even the tani in line with the restraint - warmup- Shoot policy of endaro mahanubhavulu . His play was well received by me and all in the hall for sure .
BU Ganesh prasad had stockiness with his press and i like in general this vidwan. He never rushes it is kind of good as sound overload by violin like vocal can at times be bit over your head.
Personally this endarO mahanubhAvulu was one of a kind, certainly this abhishek endaro is lovely. Keep it up A2B team,personally a great start personally for my season 2018.

Looks like the harbinger of the season, this concert and review, Rajesh! Season kaLai kaTTugiRadu! (the season starts with gusto). Keep your reviews coming.
The young cousins with their sarakku (goods) are all set for a joyful season. RasikAs are looking forward to listening to them, no doubt. Hope I can too...

For an artiste with a redoubtable prowess in vocal calisthenics, his level of Sahitya internalization is phenomenal. Although it was apparent in every kriti, Endaro mahanubhavulu was presented in a totally original and inspired manner with swaras freely and originally interpolated and many phrases in the sahitya lingered on and emphasized. I especially liked the way he sang "Raghuvara" - surely would have brought a smile to Grandpa's lips.
Interestingly there was no neraval in the concert, possibly just a fleeting one in Santanagoplakrishnam. Neraval comprises usually the crowning moments in an Abhishek concert, but I didn't miss it at all last night.

The cause of you , me or for that matter anyone aurally observing his internalization is because of the supreme intellectual play of Anantha .The pradhana laya vadhyam mrudangam asserted its intense musical presence . For me there was that cluster of sangathis in entarO where bit later nee "venurAMa bhaivam ... raghuvara' where sadguru gives lyrics like "bhAgavata rAmAyaNa .... shruti shAstra purAna" and then bit later abhishek liberally adds la la la alapanish phrases and then gets into the phrase " rama bhaktha... then sita rama bhaktha" , he was almost in that zone of MDR there .Manjapara Devadasa engulfed modern Mylapore devadasars right there , certainly the mrudangam sang both the sangathis and sancharas- Mark Waugh just finished bit ahead of Steve Waugh. Also even the submain natakapriya krithi there steve waugh gave amazing quick swara poruttam ending with nAtakapriyam where Steve finished bit ahead of Mark waugh. If I hear next 10 days his natakapriya again and again , I will struggle to disambiguate even tOdi from natakapriya.
