Bala's En Palli Kondeer Ayya

Post by RaviSri »

Here's a link to something very rare.

On her 35th death anniversary we pay tribute to the great Balasaraswati, of whom it is said, “na bhUtO, na bhaviShyati” (not in the past, not in the future). There has never been an abhinaya artiste like her in the past, nor there ever will be in the future. I have uploaded an audio of Bala singing for her own dance along with T.Brinda’s first disciple, Smt. A.R. Sundaram. The song is the popular Arunachala Kavi song ‘En paLLi koNDIr ayyA’, but they have sung it not in ragamalika starting with Mohanam, as we have normally heard, but in Madhyamavati. Thereby hangs a tale.

Jayamma, Bala’s mother once went to the market to buy vegetables. On the way she espied a beggar woman singing something. She went near the beggar and was surprised to hear this song from the beggar woman’s lips in Madhyamavati. Jayamma took her home and learnt the song from her. Thereafter, Bala danced this song only in Madhyamavati. For those accustomed to the popular version, this affords an entirely new perspective to the reclining Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam. Jayamma and Balas’ argument was, that the Lord is reclining in Samadhi avasthA, it is but appropriate you sing to him in such soft tones.
