It was a nice concert. Janaki Ramana was rendered very well. I heard Karu Baru live after quite a while. If my memory is right, the main Kalyani had RST, no Neraval. The Navaroz Krithi after the main was a surprise. Then, the Padams and the Javali - again quite a while since I heard good renditions live. The Ahiri Padam especially was really soothing. Smara Sundaranguni in Paras was rendered with a Prathi Madhyamam as is the practice (I think) in Veena Dhanammal Bani.

Smt Nandita Ravi gave good vocal support. Shri RK Shriram Kumar played well. His Mukhari was especially nice. And Shri J Vaidhyanathan rendered a short but nice Tani.

I was one among the fortunate many to listen to this concert. What was heartwarming was that many youngsters,(nearly 80% of the audience) sat right through the concert.

Rama Ravi is one of the few musicians who cannot offer anything other than vintage classical music. It was so on that evening also.

Even after 3 days, I am able to recall with pleasure Vina Pusthaka Dharini , the extraordinary Begada and Mukhari raga alapanais, Kaaru Baru and Hasthi Vadanaya. They will haunt my memory.for sometime to come.

Padams and Javalis are her forte.

Throughout ,one was repeatedly reminded of the great music of Brindha.

Yes, there was no neraval to Kanthimathi.

Nanditha Ravi followed in the footsteps of her mother. Her singing in the higher octaves contributed to the listening pleasure.

Such music always induces the accompanying artistes to give their best. Sri Ram Kumar in his raga essays and swara replies matched the main artiste.. J. Vaidyanathan, with deft hands and deep understanding gave extraordinary support all through

The quiet atmosphere of the IIT Campus, the sensitive amplification and the disciplined listening. Were the fitting backdrops.

Thanks to the IIT Music Club. A pity that Bharath could not , among his multifarious activities in and around the hall could notsavour the music.

The rare Syama Sastry varnam set the concert off to a vintage start. Tho the choice of vegavahini right after Sourashtra left a few confused in the hall, i think. It was indeed good to see a full hall, with many eminent musicians from the city too being present there. Rama Ravi's music is so unhurried that it just seems to serenade you. And such a distinct style too......... Thoroughly enjoyed, tho I too had to miss Kalyani onwards......

Paras is a janya of Mayamalavagowla - How does a prati Madhayamam get included? What if any is the reason behind singing with a prati madhayamam?

Thanks

nadhasudha,

One of the issues of Sruti magazine (I think June 2007) had this article that mentioned that Veena Dhanammal used to play/sing the ragas gauLipantu and paras with the prati madhyama. Vidushis Brinda and Mukta who learnt many kritis from Veena Dhanammal sang the paras jAvaLi with the prati madhyama. Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, who learnt this song from Vidushi T. Brinda also sang the jAvaLi with prati madhyama as Vid Brinda asked him to ensure that he didn't make any changes.

Someone from the Dhanammal bani might be able to provide a better insight.

Paras does not have a prati ma and this seems to be the only exception. Whether it happened by intent or accident is not known but is now being faithfully followed. It is only in one prayoga, I think?

See this thread on Gowlipantu from Carnatica's rasika forum for some insights on the lakshana vs lakshya aspect:

Ramanathan,
I had read this thread sometime back. Without going into the technicalities of which I know very little, it made beautiful reading. I just wish we can get increased participation from Sowmya and Shashikiran on your forum as well as here.

I remember a heated discussion about Madhyama usage in Gowlipantu as part of Raga Lakshana session of Music Academy's Annual Conference ( I think, it was TVS's SK year). Infact so much heat was there in the dicussion that there was literally a fight between SRJ and B. Rajam Iyer. I think, Vidwan B. Krishnamurthy was the one who presented the Raga. I dont remember much from that discussion because, my music theoritical knowledge at that time (and even now) was close to zilch.
