Gayathri excelled again in presenting a divine rendition at kAnchi shankara matam while the revered achAryAs are observing chAthurmAsyam....
The mahout was feeding the elephant with bigger globes of mammu. We had dharshan of shrI mahA periyavA’s adhishtAnam.
She began her recital with a varNam in bahudhAri [Adhi] by her guru shri A.Sundharesan. The way in which he has woven the swaras is amazing. It had grip and pep and seemed suitable for immediate pick-up in short duration concerts.
She soaked the gathering in bakthi when she rendered gurulEka etuvanti in gowri manOhari [thyAgarAja – kaNda chApu]. The niraval in ‘thathva bOdhana jEsi…’ reminded volumes of Periyava’s “dheivathin kural”.
aNNAswAmy sAsthri’s sArangA krithi, “ shri kAmAkshI was presented well with a short AlApanA. Gayathri and Venkata subhramaniam did a good sketch of hindhOLam. The krithi ‘mAmavathu shri sarasvathy’ of mysore vAsudhEvAchAr [Adhi] had some rapid fire rounds of swara prasthAram too.
She sang a slokam “apAra karuNA sindhum jnAndham shAntha rUpiNam
shrI chandhrasEkara gurum praNamAmi mudhAnvaham” composed by shri jayendhra sarasvathy. in mOhanam. That was followed by a krithi of shri ANdavan pichai, “chandhrasEkarEndhra sarasvathy”. The swaras and thani were well received by the audience. Especially the vidhyArthis of vEdha pAta sAlA of the matam, assembled and enjoyed the concert very well.
After mOhanam, a virutham in kIrvANi [pAl ninaindhUttum thAyinum] and the dhEvAram vAnanai resonated in the hall. Then came, ‘pAhi shrI giri rAja suthE’ of syAmA sAsthri in Anandhabhairavi and ‘akilANdEswari’ of dhIkshithar in dhwijAvanthi. It still rings in my ears. Sangeetham itself is a ring which adds beauty to the look and that is why people say “karNasya atakam [ornament to ear] – karNAtaka sangeetham”.
She sang an interesting composition of shri raveendhran (a disciple of shri A.Sundharesan), “aruL mazhai pozhivAi amruthavarshiniyE….”, a ragamAlikA
[one line – one rAgam] in amruhavarshini, hamsAnandhi, shaNmukapriya, chAramathi, Anandha bhairavi, bhairavi, kalyANi, thOdi and vasanthA.
The concert concluded with maithrIm bhajatha and mangaLam.
The day was enjoyable to me,since, lot of people from erode were there for bikshAvandhanam. Surprisingly, I met kaNNamma akkA, who sang for us in mrudhangam class [1984]at erode when i learnt from Palladam Shri V.Ramachandhran sir.
