Meaning for the song natana sabEsa by Gopalakrishna Bharathi

Hi,

I need the meaning for the Pallavi and Anupallavi of the song natana sabEsa in the ragam kAnada. This is a composition of Gopalakrishna Bharathi.

I got the pallavi line as naTana sabEsa nadi punai iSA dhiDamuru dEsha
( listening to the song by Nithyasree)

I didn't understand the meaning of the words "nadi punai" and "dhiDamuru dEsha" and

"viDayil uLLAsA".

The charanam you have given is interesting. This is Nithyasree's version.
And she sings only one charanam.

naTana sabESA = the dancing (naTana) lord (ISA) of the cosmic stage (sabhA)
nadi punai ISA = the one who bears water (punai) of the river (nadi - ganges) possibly!
Wither-proof (ever-fresh - vADA) lord of mt. kailAS; the beloved (nESA) of the daughter (magal) of the mountain king (malai - himavAn); one who provides enthusiasm/pep/energy (ullAsa) for the answers (viDai) we raise in our wordly journeys...
(paNiyuncI mAnE = bAlakrishNan tAnE paNiyum SImAnE = the SImAn (king/overlord) that the poet, (bAlakrishNan) bows down to (paNiyum)

Very good translation, as usual.
What you say about 'nadi punai' sounds right. Interesting that punai also means water! This association might have made GB (sub consciously) choose 'punai' here. He would have realized it AFTER the composition came about, of course. CML has a thing about my 'consulting' GB on these because of the road I have to take in order to reach him!

"punaithal " in Tamil means wearing. So "nadi punai Isa" would mean "the lord wearing the river (on his matted lock)s". "punal" means water.

Also I think it is "vaDa kailAsa" ie He of the *northern* Mt Kailas.

viDai im Tamil means a bull. So "viDai ullAsa" is one who enjoys (roaming) on the bull Nandi.

punai is to wear and also nadi (as in punal). I checked it. I went into what would have made GB choose punai (was it because he was sub consciously thinking of punai as nadi too that the word occured to qulaify it?). I have wondered about a word in a song sometimes, after a composition is born. It is more obvious in prose. As you write a story, you would wonder about a new character. Why is she here? After pages of writing, you would know why. It is something like that...
