Query in Enneramum Oru Kaalai Thookki of Marimuttha Pillai

Post by nulls »

Hello,

I have a query on the Tamil kriti Enneramum Oru Kaalai Thookki of Marimutta Pillai.

The pdf of the Annamalai University publication of his kritis can be found at http://musicresearchlibrary.net/omeka/items/show/2603

In the charanam, third line, சிக்கனவே பிடித்து சந்த்ரனை நிலத்தில் தேய்த்த போது உரைந்ததோ. I’m trying to figure which Puranic story this is based on… if it is referring to King Daksha’s curse on the moon, then the meaning of the line is opposite to that of the story - in the story, Shiv protects the moon and makes him wax and wane. But in the line above, it sounds like Shiva catches the moon and rubs him on the earth… please help me understand this.

This refers to Veerabhadra (based on Shiva's instructions) destroying the Yagna of Daksha. At that time he injured the Devas in various ways and Chandra's fate is described here.

Sometimes (like in this song) the acts of Veerabhadra are ascribed to Shiva directly, taking Veerabhadra to be a form of Shiva himself. It must be உறைந்ததோ (frozen) since the moon is said to be cold.

.
உரைந்ததோ = தேய்ந்ததோ எனலாமா?

உரை = to wear away by rubbing. Full moon turned into a crescent.

Isn't the question about the foot? That it froze due to contact with the cold moon ?

Rajani,
Yes, 'frozen', it seems to me too. One could also derive the added meaning 'stunned'--its being frozen?
