The joy of any season usually starts even in november . Ofcourse the fever is not as high as say a time before Covid , but hey let this year turn it back and take it to 2019 or before period. RIght now in this week you have atleast BVB schedule being put with few artists already completed their concert season concrt in BVB . This concert can be kind of tucked as a season too atleast for one reason as i am writing this review just when the season began few days back
Once upto a time when the extraordinary Dr Vedavalli amma sang and i also attended few lecdems her conviction in both concert performance and lecdem performance floored me than in early 2002 plus to 2010 period. Young sumitra was kind of there after few years may be around 2010 or so then she kind of became a co performer.SHe slowly raised as a individual performer and After say few decades sumitra has blosommed a great vaarisu of vedavalli amma . When the concert is thematic that too with most musically intellectual vaggeyakkara muttuswami dikshitar , it was indeed a great presentation
She started with a lovely slokham and just said she is going to cover different musical structures of MD and that indeed came out well, some very noticable like say multiple charanams of say maaye tvam. Thank God she did not speak after that at all, thank god it did not go in a route say pilgrimage or navagraha where there is a chance it becomes more of a lecdem than a concert. She never spoke after that and she left the rasikas to internet to google even the rare jaganmohanam, samantha etc...
Nathaadi guruguhO with few strealined patterns was indeed a glowing maayama glowing start . Just felt why not more of swaras. THe huseni alapana and krithi was a distilled esssence of classicism, i am such a lover of this ragam huseni that too with me hearing few nadaswara vidwans playing she did well and kutcheri zoned in the vedavalli mindset.
The paddhati perfection came out very well in tarangini and multiple charanams followed at the end and then multiple swaras was surely well done . Jaganmohanam and samantha could have been dealt bit more ,but it was more a tickmark where she just said I know this 2 rare krithis
Amoung big ragas , i love bhairavi as a main. Her alapana was very well sung. the neraval and swaras did not the disturb the kamalAMba kshetra temple tour of the krithi. RIght proportion was the key there but some times right proportion is also an enemy of intense classicism . I felt she could have dwelt bit more swaras for the main krithi.
Kurinji as a tailender came out very well the muse was competing with huseni and the last slokha in ragamaliga was most impressive(especially the neelambari segment) than the final dharmasamvardhini , i am sure she knows the patron jaya well who was there , Sumitra could have sung bit more and patron jaya along with Nick would have not bothered if the concert ended 5 mins later.
Dr Hemalatha is very very underrated violinist . She has both press and tonal quality , she impressed me a lot , bit reminded me of V V S there . Ganapathy had lot of interesting patterns but i missed bit more aDI in terms of more strikes and bit more power would have helped . Shankar kanjira was responsive and he was apt and did not rob Dikshitar mastery that too with variety of krithi structure. Sumitra Vasudev could bit watch out for more lung power , at times during neraval and swaras her ideas are not matching that well as the krithi power.
