Hi Bharath,

Thanks a lot for the information. Is this a concert open to all? I mean, it wouldn't be ethical to barge in into a private concert :).

Not at all, Mr Sudarshan. All are welcome.

It is a pleasure and a privilege for us to host this concert. Would request the rasikas.org community to treat this as a personal invitation.

If there can be ONE reason for me to be envious of the Chennaites, THIS is it ! Too bad I can't be there for all these presentations , past and present, by the doyens of carnatic music.

the sole purpose of announcing in a public forum is to draw more people. had it been a private affair, why would it even get posted here...

Jeyaraaj & Jaysri : Another q . Can a recording be made off course with the caveat that it will be only for private purposes & shared with those rasikas who may want it?

Bharat : Can you please pass on an advance request to Mami to play the 2 rare krithis of MD namely Sri Nilotpala Nayike in Narireetigaula and Tyagaraja danyam in Durbar, in this concert ? TIA.

the concerts are usually recorded by the organising group, and the recordings are usually available for rasikas who want it. hence, u might not have to make a copy yourself. however, if you are going to make one, i guess nobody is going object.

with regard to requests, mami has already been requested to play darbAr at this concert or her concert at Raga Sudha Hall on nov 15th. however, i dont know where she is going to play it. the meticulour planner she is, she was a little sceptic about taking more requests when i spoke to her last week.

This is my first live veena concert experience .Perhaps I needed a coercion of fellow rasikas(especially coolkarni) to persuade me to attend a veena concert. To a great extent , I was almost blank not knowing whether to expect anything from a veena concert. Certainly a kind of conditioning has happened over the last decade where the least I do in vocal concerts is usually race to see the patterns of that days performers to vidwans/vidushis who have given great experience to that krithi ,that neraval that swaram etc.Looks like I cannot drop these experiences of past.

Some how for a long time I have been thinking that rAgas that have a tinge of more subtleness and a suppression of very high expressions come out well when played with veenA. sahAna was beautiful , kalpakam mami's sahAna azhuttam was wonderful.

Shanmughapriya and an annoucement of siddhi vinayagam took me to jAmbhavans semmangudi/sOmu . Did I hear the assertive expression of shanmughapriya, perhaps not .She played it beautifully ,but felt her swara patterns did not bring the great assertive charm of shanmughapriya.

supradipam generally never stays in my head ,she played it good. Her azhuttam style of playing brought great charm to kedAram. reetigowlai + D1 is nArI rItigauLa was played excellently and liked it a lot.

The next begadA was not my cup of tea. Possibly I have to confess when the rAgam is
not the best of my liking , it is little hard to push myself when it is played in veenA. The drop of subha(siva)pantuvarAli was brilliant .The tone of her play just gelled well with the rAgam. tAnam was very nice, she played sri sathyanArayanam with a nice spacing ,really brought the charm and little pathos that the rAga always has.I felt she could have converted that to a main with a nice neraval and swaram. But her decision to stop at the krithi , perhaps just left with a feeling of incompleteness.

The pure Abheri of MD was just ok. If begAdA swings little bit away to my liking, kalyAni takes me too much away. But mAmi did a very nice move .She quickly wrapped the alApana of kalyAni , played a very very good tAnam and the krithi was played quite well with a nice round of neraval and just a quick round of swaram (Makes me think may be is it too difficult to play longer swara patterns in veenA).

The shriranjani was excellent both for its sequence after kalyAni and the charm that it brings. THe next sAmantA was again excellent . If shri rAmakrishnan did not announce it I would have assumed it was thilang(is samAntA close to tillang). The last rAgamaliga was new to me , I think I got shuruTTi? and vasantA ? there.

Ramakrishna gave a great support , I noticed Smt kalpagam mAmi was keeping her veena more horizontal whereas rAmakrishnan was keeping it little slanting. Every pluck had a precise and azhuttam tone from mAmi and she appeared very effortless. The mridangist shri kumAr went with a mandate that I will play soothingly to veena.

JeyarAj's home was very conducive to CM, excellent paintings and picture frames all centered in veena, muthuswami dikshitar etc..

Sankara Iyers Concert may not appear here - maybe a few tracks , here and there.

There are three more concerts scheduled , before we wind up for 2007.
THESE CONCERTS ARE OPEN TO ALL .RASIKAS CAN FEEL FREE TO PARTICIPATE.

rajumds,
Great to hear from you with all the information and a warm invitation. Hope a lot of 'rasikAs' in Chennai attend the concerts. It is just (immense) distance that keeps many of us away.
I hope those who are in Chennai appreciate their luck that they have a chance to attend chamber music concerts! I know that it needs a lot of hard work and preparation to arrange a concert. We at rasikAs seem to be privileged enough that the performers themselves are eager to play the hosts!
How I wish I were there in India now, than arrive during the season.
Yes, let the music trickle in a little at a time, and we do not want to add to your workload by asking for it when you are busy with the concerts...

Words fail to describe the richness of Kalpakam Mami's concert. Everything was excellent - Mami's renditions and the accompanists, the hospitality, and last but not least, the conducive environment.

A big thanks to the organizers and the hosts for such an unforgettable treat.

it would be good if you used the transliteration scheme uniformly... and correctly too, if possible... its definitely not begAdA or begadA...

and as far as commenting on Kalpakam mami's music... what can i say?

Just superb!! I can probably listen to this on repeat for quite a while. Thanks Vainika for the prelude. Right at the start of the krithi, that oscillating gamakam was so right on target and so good. No superlative adjectives do justice to such perfect nuances.

Ramki,

the clip at which Mami and you have played this kriti is interesting -- it is faster than anytime I have heard it before. And boy do her fingers move deftly and with striking clarity in the enunciation of the sAhityam -- particularly at "samyamidhyeya" and "guruguha" in the caraNam madhyamakaalam... sublime !

Your vocal jAru on the opening line of the anupallavi during the repetition is just perfect.

This concert of Kalpagam mami takes me back to a "concert series" of hers circa 1994 for a lonewolf... it sparked off several such concerts exclusively for Michiganders visting Madras !!!

The "embarrassment of riches" (in a positive vein) include

-----------------------------------------

1) rAga sketches of pUrvikalyani, begaDa, suruTTi etc

2) abhayAmbA jagadambA - kalyANi

3) rAmacandreNa -- mAnji

4) s'rI sarasvati hite -- mAnji

5) cintaya mAkandamUlakandam -- bhairavi

-------------------------------------------

6) pancamAtangamukha -- malahari

7) vINAbheri - Abheri

8) s'rI nIlotpala nAyike -- rItigauLa

9) s'rI varalakshmi -- s'rI

10) santAna rAma svAminam -- hindolavasantam

11) bhaktavatsalam abhishekavallIyuktam -- vams'avatI

12) brhannAyaki -- AndhAli

-----------------------------------------------

13) tyAgarAjO virAjate -- aTANA

14) inta calamu (varNam) -- in a simulation of Veena Dhanammal's style

15) Ehi manmata kOTi (varNam) -- s'rIranjani - Tiger

16) varNam and nIrajakshi kAmAkshi -- hindolam

17) sadacales'varam -- bhUpAlam

18) sadAs'raye abhayAmbike -- cAmaram

---------------------------------------------------

19) hasti vadanAya namastubhyam -- navaroj

20) gaurI girirAja kumArI -- gaurI

21) tyAgarAjAya namaste -- bEgaDA

22) s'rI mAtA -- bEgaDa

23) siddhIs'varAya namaste -- nIlAmbarI

24) tyAgarAjam bhajeham -- nIlAmbarI

25) krishnAnanda mukunda -- gauLipantu

annapUrNE visAlAkshi, hATakEsvara samrakshamAm, siddIsvarAya namastE, angArakam AshrayAmi, sEshAcala nAyakam bhajAmi, Ehi trijagadISA, nIvE gANi (apart from those that are listed) and many more such gems.. both on the vINai and/or her voice.

"annapurNe vis'AlAkSi" was quite a revelation when I first heard it from her... not the usual stuff. So also parts of "s'rI venugOpAla".

s'eSacala nAyakam was exceptional for its tempo itself.

this is what i had felt about the concert of mami:

Sitting in the small-balcony-garden of a flat in the 4th floor of a building on a busy road in mandaveli, one was treated to some divine music which is tough to explain by words. it is at such instances that one really is short of words to explain the feeling.

Each piece was presented with such precision and what a careful selection of pieces and ordering. It was an evening of blissful music. i m in tears even trying to write this post, such was the music.

The AlApanais of nArirItigauLa, bEgaDa, shiva pantuvarALi and its tAnam... well, mami was telling us in her own sweet way, that carnatic music, especially on vINai, has no parallels to it. It is a unique music of its own kind which cannot be matched.

Kalpakam mami began with sahAnA varNam. The cAmaram kriti was rendered with a nice AlApanai and a beautiful round of svarams. The supradIpam piece was presented neatly with a neater set of svarams. The kEdAram kriti was inspiring.

Next came the first detailed AlApanai of the day. Well, it was nArirItigauLA. The new flavour and feeling suddha dhaivatam brings into the rAgam which otherwise goes along the lines of the popular rItigauLa, was superb. The AlApanai and the kriti were presented creating a nice mood to listen. The bEgaDa AlApanai was done very well. After listening to a lec-dem on bEgaDa just about a week, this was like a true demonstration to what is bEgaDa. All the special prayOgams, the aprati madhyamam shown in its place, it was amazing. The kriti, another heavy weight, was presented beautifully.

shivapantuvarALi was the next in line. As mami was playing that soothing AlApanai, i was praying in the darkest corners of my mind for a tAnam. and it got answered. It was a beautifully presented tAnam and the kriti was rendered amazingly also.

It was the day of suddha dhaivatam probably. The beauty this particular svaram adds to a ragam was again illustrated in AbhEri.

After all this fair, the main kalyANi was a little surprising. However, her presentation of the rAgam, tAnam and the kriti with neraval and svarams was very nice and fitting for the main piece of the day.

The srI ranjani AlApanai was done beautifully. The kriti, a tad slower than the popular versions, was nice to listen. This concert wasn't going lighten at all. The sAmantA AlApanai and kriti were good.

Each kriti deserved better adjectives and more and more superlatives and none of them would actually be enough to describe the music. The sight of the old lady with her vINai on her lap, strumming it to produce divine music with utmost precision of the notes and their gamakkams and the azhuttam she produces, well, Music is definitely god given.

Sri Ramakrishnan provided very good support and played the vINai well. Sri Kumar on the mrudangam played in tune with what was presented thro' the concert. His tani was nice as well.

It was a concert where everything fell in place and 'kacchidam' is the only word i can say...

PS: this was the first concert at our group which went without any speech. i hope this trend will follow... :)

Thanks vainika for those excerpts. I thought somebody was singing initially...beautiful.

I met Kalpakkam Mami's niece who visits her son in our neighbourhood and I always tell her how much we discuss about her music on this forum. Now I really got to listen!!
