Flutist Jayaprada Ramamurthy's concert for Radio Sangeet Sammelan was simply outstanding. Though the broadcast quality by All India Radio Chennai was poor, the concert and the quality of Music over-ruled every technical discrepancy.

Jayaprada's merit lies in her unique approach - traditional and yet being innovative. Her presentation belies her Scholarship in Music, Perfect understanding of the Flute technique, a meditative quality, high imagination and the sheer ability to evoke the correct 'Bhava' in the listener and at the same time, presenting new ideas with complete freshness.

She began the recital with the traditional Varnam which established the mood for a great concert to follow. She elaborated on the Ragas Hindolam and Kalyani and her swaraprastharas for 'Govardhana Girisham' and 'Etaavunnara' highlighted her prowess on the control over ‘Layam’. It needs different types of fingering technique to delineate the same raga in different pitch flutes and in different octaves. Her usage of the 'Bansuri' - the base flute displayed her mastery and command over the instrument.

The Sindhu Bhairavi Nama Sankirtanam of Ganapati Sachidananda Swami was a rare piece and proved to be a melodious delight on the base flute. She aptly finished her rectial with the Brindavana Saranga Tillana of Dr.Balamurali, whose Sahitya 'Thiyyani haayanipinchu chiru ravali nee murali madhuri' is a befitting description to this artist's presentation.

The accompanying artists supported the recital well, without disturbing the imaginative flow of the Main artist.

The violinist's raga elaborations were brief and to the point. The Tani was good except that it could have been shorter, keeping in view the duration of this type of concert. Accompanying artists should be aware of the concept of brevity while playing for such high-profile short duration concerts.

On the whole, the concert was highly enjoyable. It is visible that Jayaprada is laying her foundations as an artist who is here to stay, and sustain the rich tradition of Carnatic Flute.

The Song list included:
