The navasandhi kauttuvams were performed in temples before the deity was taken out in ceremonial procession to propitiate the gods that guard the 8 directions [1] so that the procession would not encounter any obstacles. The eight directions meet in the center – hence the term sandhi – and, at this point of union lies the brahma sandhi – so 8 + brahma sandhi = 9/navasandhi.
kauttuvams are small prayers that are composed on a particular deity – they can be in Sanskrit/tamizh, and possibly other languages as well. In this set of the navasandhi kauttuvam, the description includes the consorts of the concerned god, the kind of dance, music, and tAl required to propitiate the Lord, the throne that he occupies, vAhana if appropriate, the mudra used to depict the god, etc. etc.
I think some of the words are not very clear, and I have no clue about the meaning of some of the others. I hope Rajani, Arasi, or even one of the other dancers can pitch in…so that we can come up with a complete running meaning for Krishnaa.
